555.0. "Drive shaft splines." by CECV03::FEINEN () Fri Nov 10 1989 08:46

Yesterday I got a letter from my marina, they found a few problems
with my engines during winterization. I'll list the problems, I
would appreaciate some input on cost of repairs, and advice on fixing
    the problems myself.

Port engine vibration when starting and running, port engine front
mounts loose. Out drive hard to remove, shaft holding engine ( that's
all they said about this). Drive shaft splines gone-should be replaced.
Engine must be realigned and secured before installing drive. All
    exhaust hoses leaking water.

    Any advice would be appreaciated.

    Thanks
    Rich

I don't know what kind of outdrives you have, but the problems you
    mentioned are not unusual.

Loose engine mounts or misaligned mounts canb cause stress/wear on
your outdrive or transmission/prop shaft. Mounting screws and bolts can
pull out of the enfine beds, or the rubber can deteriorate and/or
fail with age and oil/gasoline/diesel getting on them. Leaking exhaust
hoses can be from the hoses getting old and starting to fail or from
the clamps being too loose or from the exhaust hose fitting corroding
away because the aluminum is deteriorating.

The drive shaft splines aren't all that unusual depending upon
age/hours of use.a little rust on the splines, coupled with the
vibration/moytion from bnormal use will do a number on the splines in a
short time- the main drive shaft on my OMC I/O has to get replaced over
    the winter.

If you have a few years/hours on the boat- I'd say it sounds like
the normal I/O maintenence for a salt water boat- the vibration could
be anything- but likely a plug or plug wire or ignition. If you got
a few seasons on the engine- could be a burned valve.

I would have another mechanic look at the engines- have you had a
    compression test?

Without knowing age/history it's hard to comment any more

I really should not comment to this note because I just had my engine
pulled for a major overhaul/rebuild. But this was after 22 years
    of very light use.

See what happens when you sail, and don't have to use the iron wind!~
