491.0. "Kaama vs. Arneson" by PARITY::WOYAK () Fri Aug 25 1989 11:26

A friend of mine is getting a new go-fast boat and is considering
the Kaama drives..He asked me what the real differences are between
the Kaama system and an Arneson system..Anyone out there know..I
have had TRS and Speedmaster's but never a surface system.

    Thanks

The Arneson is the original surface designed system and functions
very well for high horsepower high output competion boats. They
are very expensive. The design principle is simple and has a lot
less hardware involved than say a Mercrusier I/O.
The Kaama is an off shoot in design of the Arneson and in a lot
of peoples mind is "JUNK". They use their own engine configurations
with their drives so you get a package deal when obtaining them.
The design has a lot to be desired and is not really capable of
taking high horepower loads. The mounting scheme for the drive to
couple to the tramsom is flimsy. They use studs with no support
plates or backup plates. I have personnally seen boats that had
the Kaama drive rip right out of the transom and the person's boat
sunk. This is not good. There are many law suits against Kaama for
    difficiencies in their product.
What type of boat and application is your friend going to get involved
with? Formula used to offer Kaama's as an option, but no longer
as of a couple of years ago.
Both styles have a tendency to be difficult to maneuver at slow
speeds and in reverse. The season for this is that the position
of the prop is very high in the water and doesnot get a good bite.
Tell your friend that props for these things are "super expensive",
like in the $1200.00 per and up.
I have had some experience with these things in the past and I would
personally go for a TRS or Speedmaster, what's known as old reliable
    just as you mentioned.
491.2ARNESON UBER ALLESNUTMEG::KLEINMon Aug 28 1989 13:0124

I've been running Arnesons for several years now ... and they are
reliable and strong as hell. When I built the boat I had a choice
of Kaama's and Arensons and went with the Arnesons based on lots
of experience with the Formula/Kaams combinations.

I know of several boats that were down for entire seasons due to
Kaama problems. I have a friend with severe facial damage caused
by his Kaamas causing trouble at speed resulting in a violent spin-out.
This after a drive fell off and sank his boat in shallow water.
(He just refused to take a hint). In all fairness, it doesn't seem
to be the drive that causes the problem (although it is a factor)
so much as the difficulty of installing/aligning the Kaamas. Formula
in particular has had fits with Kaamas.

As I said, I know of hundred MPH boats running Arnesons - and no
one has had problems with them. I run ASD-6s with 550 HP/motor.

As far as backing/maneuvering - it's easy to do....just pull the
planes all the way up and drop the drives all the way down and it
feels and handles just like an alpha/bravo/trs drive. Piece of cake.

    Good luck.

I thank you guys for your information. In all the channels we checked
the response was the same. The units he was looking at were a Stuphen
with Kaama's, an Aronow with speedmasters , and a Magnum with
Arneson's..He is going with the Magnum and I believe has signed the
deal. I am told it is a twin turbo diesel set up with the Arneson's,
capable of over 50 knots...Sounds like a very interesting set-up..

    Thanks again
