The Idea of getting together boaters who want to have some control
in their own destiny; so to speak, has occured to me more than
once lately. I have proposed this idea to a few people and so far
    have a fairly positive responce.

    So.. I'll present it here.

Who would be interested in getting a group of people together to
purchace a working marina (location not yet known) allong the north
shore area (Cape Ann?). As stockholders in the corporation we would
have voteing rights to control the operation/stratagies of the marina.
We could set prices for stockholders slip space and also non
    stockholder slip space.

Besides giving us the opportunities to have the kind of marina we
want to be in, we would also have other advantages such as wholesale
buying power and tax advantages associated with owning a business.

With a resonable ammount of investors the risk involved would be
minimized and you would be guaranteed a slip space at a reasonable
and fair cost instead of being subject to the wims of some price
    gouging boatyard.

If any of you would like to explore the possibilities drop me a
note. In numbers we can make this happen!

                                      Thanks

    Re: 12

I understand what you were saying about slips and fuel, but out
here on the lower Connecticut River many marina's feel the market
will bear their prices. Example: Essex Island Marina (about 3 to
4 miles from Long Island Sound), for a seasonal slip for my 24'
    boat is $4200.00. It's a gorgeous place but at $175.00 a foot,its
a bit much. Yet the place is always full with at least a years
    waiting list.
You have to reserve your transient slips at least 2 weeks in advance
also. That's why I have a slip up river in Chester, $1400.00 is
a better fit in my wallet. Besides, I don't want to own the smallest
    boat in the place.
Fuel along the River runs from $1.34 to $1.50 depending where one
    stops.
I think marina's such as Essex charge what they do because THERE
IS so much money out there. $4200 is alot to me, but pennies to
a lot of folks in Southwest Conn.

    Walt:

I'd love to own a marina, or shares in one, can we make it more
    central then the north shore?

    Andy...

OK WALT I'D CONSIDER IT. TO ME A MARINA IS A PARKING LOT FOR A BOAT,
(THE SLIP THAT IS) I DON'T NEED ALL THE FANCY TRASH. SOMEHOW THOUGH
I DON'T THINK IT WILL BE THAT SIMPLE, BUT I'M ALL EARS.

Hi Jim & Others who have contacted me.

It's not going to be simple to get a marina, nothing worthwile is
ever free or without work to get. But it is a realistic idea.
For some people being involved may mean that they will donate some
of their time and skills to the Marina. But for others it may be
no more than simply buying stock and being a shareholder; just like
    owning any other investment.
The extent of involvement will be up to the individual to decide.
In order to make this work we will need to put together a team of
entrepreneurial people from many fields. From Marketing,Management,
Accountants,Sales and Financial to Mechanical,Electrical Skills
and people who just enjoy "messing around with boats" for many
of the jobs that come up in the day to day operations.
In short - there is something for everybody, whose interest is boats.

I'm open for any idea's that anybody has in regards to this. It's
not something that will happen overnight ( at Least I don't think
so) as it takes planning and careful consideration of many, many
    items involved.

The first thing I would like to do is format a general outline of
goals for the business. If there are any suggestions or thoughts
that you feel deserve to be considered? Please mention them.

Mr. Moderator: Prehaps this Idea should have its own seperate Note?

                                   Thanks Walt

    Walt,

Has this been cross-posted in the sailing notes conference?

I would imagine you'd get some interest from there as well.
