Yamaha outboard owners: FYI section of letter I just sent to my dealer. /ben Clemons Marine Supply 143 Pleasant Street Brunswick, ME Another matter: when I was adding oil yesterday, I put the mouth of the oil bottle into the filler hole and the safety chain attached to the filler cap popped out and the filler cap fell into 30 feet of water!!! What an extraordinary design feature that one is! Please order me another filler cap. If this will NOT be covered by the warranty, please let me know and I will write to Yamaha and tell them what I think of their design for the safety chain.

Not to minimize your problem or anything, but if you're otherwise happy with your boat and motor, an oil cap dropped overboard is a pretty minor problem. I doubt you'll see the dealer or Yamaha make any major changes in their design or business philosophies as a result of your letter, but if it makes you feel better... Rick W.

How about writing that letter to Yamaha anyway? They might be quite interested in getting such a design weakness pointed out to them. Dropping filler caps certainly do not enhance customer satisfaction! A polite letter to the people that really can do something about the original problem might be more constructive than just demanding a new cap for your engine while letting us other Yamaha owners go on dropping caps all over the ocean! -jcl

To complete this story: I stopped at Clemens Marine to pick up the oil filler cap which they had finally received! Even though they had told me over the phone a month ago that it would not be covered by the warrantee, they gave it to me for no charge and said thay would try to get it covered. The part probably costs less than $5.00 and they might just be trying to keep a satisfied customer and eat the replacement cost themselves. Ben |
