436.0. "Certified Sales in Mendon MA" by SALEM::BOHANEK () Wed Jul 12 1989 12:30

    Hi people,

I use to live in southern Mass and knew of a dealer in Mendon (I
think) on Rt140 that sold repossed boats as well as goverment
confiscations. My problem is I don't remember the name of the place.
Can any help me out ?

The dealer is on Rt. 16 not Rt 140 and it is called
Certified Sales Inc. Their number is 508-478-0200.

I was there recently and they have quite a variety.

Some are real disasters, but others are like-new repo's.
The repo's are put up for open-bid. They will tell you what
the highest bid is and when the bid will close.

I don't know anyone who has bought a boat there. Would be
interesting to hear from other noters with their experiences.

It's Certified Boat Sales. Most of the boats are damaged or torn
apart. I was there this summer and saw some that are beyond repair.
Storm damage etc. Then on the ones that look ok could nickle and
dime you in the long run. I think the want ads have just as good
a deal if you find someone desperate to sell their boat. It depends
on what your looking for. Good Luck.

I don't have first hand experience, but do have second hand knowledge.

Three years ago the friend of my wife's husband bought a 27' Formula
there. It needed a gread deal of work, but the individual was able
to do most of it himself. This fellow hand been in boating for a
few years and included owning boats up to 30 to 33 feet.

Our two families went for a ride on Wini the first summer and he
told me some of what he had done over the previous winter to this
    boat.

This was a twin engine model and he rebuilt one motor, bought a
second hand engine and rebuilt that one two.

He completely did over all upholstery in the cabin including new
    cushions and headliner.

He sanded the boat (fiberglass) and painted himself.

Of course the baot was stripped so he added all electronics and
everything else not bolted down (he probably replaced that stuff
    as well).

He had custom made complete new canvas set.

I believe he told me he paid something like $10K for the boat
and put something like $5K into it.

He did all the work himself.

He has been around boats a few years, and built hot rods (nice show
    type) so is mechanically inclined.

    He spent all winter.

His cost about $15K. What you you pay for a 27' Formula that could
    not be told from new?

This is not for the novice. This guy is VERY experienced.

I tried Certified Sales a year ago. They want a deposit,
I believed it was $100, you fill out a form and place
your bid for the boat. If it were a receint repro the
original owner has 21 days to pay up. After the 21 days
Certified Sales will call all low bidders, tell them
what the high bid is and give you the option of raising
their bid. This is done until one bidder remains.
