390.1 | THey are out there someplace! | BIZNIS::CADMUS | | Wed May 31 1989 12:16 | 28 |

Yes- there is a place, but I can't remember the name. They used to
advertise in the Homeowners magazines like Popular mechanix, etc.
I believe it is the same outfit that handles the EATON outdrive parts-
they are located in NY someplace.
Try the back section of Home mechanics, Popular Scieince, etc- then
give the palce that handles Eaton parts a call- I'll bet you luck out.
BTW- if al you need is a needle and seat, or crab gaskets- the carbs
were ussually made by tillotson ore one of the amll engibe carb mfrs
parts should be available from the local distrivutor.
A new thought- there are a number of after market repair manuals for
Outboards arouind- they often list the current source of parts for
obsolete motors.
I'v egot a bearcat ( HOmelite /Fisher-Pierce) 55 HP outboard with
three running spares. The local dealer went bankrupt a few years ago,
and I bought out all his spares at auction- cost me $120.00
I inventoried everything and it came to over $7000 list at 1977 prices
( last price list I had.)
Check in the want ads in the back of the home owners/popular science type
magazines and the boating magazines

390.3 | 4 Stroke, 55&85 Hp | BIZNIS::CADMUS | | Wed May 31 1989 15:58 | 49 |

RE:.2
Yes- these motors are a long story. Homelite started with a strong
lower unit and took the old CRosley engine castings, stood that
engine on it's nose and ended up with a 55C.I, 55HP 4cycle outboard.
It looks like a sailboat auxiliary with a hangover- with the oil filter
water cooled manifilds etc.
Heavy- but QUIET and ECONOMICAL. later on they took a Coventry Climax
( Read racing block) engine and made an 85 HP version that wasn't
nearly as popular. The problem was that these engines were heavy and
the
4 cycles never caught on. I was using it during the 74xand 77 energy
crunch- I cioould go out all day cruisin in my 17" Thompson on one tank
of fuel.
Homelite sold to Fisher-Pierce ( of Boston Whaler fame) and finally
to another outfit before they went under. Parts are still available at
ridiculous prices fron an aoutfit in NY state, but most engine arts are
crosely and can be obtained through either the local auto store or
through some of the antique car folks.thre is also a shop in Marblehead
who has tons of new and used parts and reapirs them.
All three engines are in Storage- I gave them to my son who is
looking for a boat he can put twins on.
THey were great motors- quite, smooth, odor free, no smoke, and not
thirsty like the 2strokes I have owned. THe 85 and 55 used the same
lower units- these motors were built like a tank!. The only trouble I ever
had was the engine block getting plugged from corrosion ( cast Iron
Blocks).Pop off the plates on either side, rod out the rust- make 2 new
gaskets and good for another 5 yrs!
These engines would idle right down to around 450 rpm and you couldn't
even hear it running- great for trolling.
About three years ago I ran into a guy who had a brand new 85HP- 1970
model still in the original crate- wanted $1600 for it. I thought it
was too much for an engine that old- although it was brand new.
I don't know why the 4cycles never caught on- too much weight I guess
I've gotten to hate outboards with their overpriced special parts and
arrogant dealers. I've ended up going I/O where at least I can get
engine parts from somebody who has to be competitive, my local ato
parts store.
- the I/Oparts and service ,of course, are from arrogant/overpriced dealers.

Thanks muchly Dick. You seemed to have hit the nail on the
head. Electra Marine says that they stock all Scott parts
for the U.S. and they'll even rebuild my carb.
Thankyou note boaters,

I'm trying to find a dealer that stocks Scott-Atwater (haven't heard that
name in a while, eh?) outboard parts. I have a runnning 1954 5hp that I'd
like to restore. Before I moved to California 4 years ago, there was a small
shop on the Saugus river near the Lynnway bridge that stocked alot of parts...
but now that I'm back, the place has disappeared. It may have been called
something like River or Riverfront Marine. Someone must have purchased the
inventory.
Any idea where I should look for parts....NE locally or elsewhere.
Thanks,
Jim

Where are you located? The standard answer for anyone located around
central Mass is Whitney's in Leominster. The tel# and directions are
located one of the other notes about needing old parts for outboards.
I've never been there but he supposedly has all kinds of outboard stuff
stuck in a number of old barns. Rick Wilson get's alot from Whitney's.

I'm pretty sure that Whitney's has mostly OMC and related renamed
brands parts. One time when I was there with Rick, he asked about it
and the answer was something like he had a few parts but not much.
