372.0. "Leaking vinyl tops" by WMOIS::D_BARRON () Thu May 11 1989 11:36

Does anybody have a fix for a new vinyl top that leaks
thru the stitching? so far I've tride bees wax type snow seal,
but because of the dark blue color the top gets real hot and
it melts, also tride silicone, but that just peels off, and
tent seal, that also peels off. Any other ideas.
     Thanks

There is a product with the generic name something like "Selastic".
Hammar Hardware here in Nashua sells in tubes under the name "Seal All".
It's a clear rubbery material that cures remaining somewhat flexible and
has a tight bond to the parent material, is extermely strong and
    impervious to most everything.

I used it as a "built up patch" on the windshield washer reseviour
of my Jeep, building it up to span & fill a hole the size of a dime.
It's been 2 years in contact with alcohol washer fluid in the heat
under my hood without leaking a drop. Its pretty amazing stuff.

My bimini/camper top is not vinyl but it is a dark burgundy in color.
I use "Scotch Guard" (by 3M I think). You can buy it at most grocery stores
and I've have great success with it. When I bought the boat 4 years ago I
also had leaks through the stitching, after I applied Scotch Guard the problem
went away. I don't know if it works as well on vinyl or even if it's usable
on vinyl - check the directions before you try it. I just spray it on the dry
canvas in the spring and it lasts all season. You want to take care not to get
it on the fiberglass - If I remember correctly there is a warning on the can
about it.

Good Luck...

Scotch Guard sounds good but it says not to use it on
    Vinyl.

I went to a Vinyl top shop last week and asked what they use
and was surprized to find out the best thing they found to work
was a good "PASTE_WAX" rubbed into the seams and stitching then
the excess wiped off, so far "works good for me"

    Thanks!
