369.0. "Problem with Volvo 280 tilt/electric motor" by CURIE::THACKERAY (Ray Thackeray MR03 DTN 297-5622) Tue May 09 1989 12:51

    I had a problem with the tilt mechanism. It would lower the drive,
    no problem. But it would only raise a few inches. This is the electric
    motor version.

    So I checked out the clutch and shimmed it, so that works OK and
    the drive does now raise all the way. BUT SLOOOOOOWWLY. It sounds
    like the electric motor is trying its best, but isn't strong enough
    for the job.

    I checked the wiring for resistance, etc. and everything is OK there,
    there's a good charge in the batteries all that.

    What can be wrong?

    Ray;

    I had an OMC outdrive which tilted mechanically via a small motor, worm
    drive and rack assembly. I don't know if there is any mechanical
    similarity but the motor did need rebuilding every so often. It worked
    incredibly hard for its size and the marine environment was pretty
    abusive to the internals of the motor. ( Coming down is easy, gravity
    helps.)

    You might want to check the brushes of the motor for starters, but
    the place that did my motors, DECO in Hudson, NH will check it out
    and always did right by me in rebuilding work.

    The design of OMC was also subject to binding if you overtightend
    certain parts. Not knowing your mechanics I cant speak to that. What
    I would do is loosen up my tilt drive train to 'just short of snug' and
    run it. If it ran ok then begin snugging up the sections one at a time
    and test looking for the part that caused the binding. If this process
    did'nt cause any improvement I tested it by operating the tilt while
    manually lifting upward on the drive. If that improved the performance
    the motor took a trip to the rebuilder.

    One last thought is battery condition...my OMC had a low output
    alternator...if the battery is weak and the engine is idling
    maybe there just aint enough juice.

                                          Good Luck with it

369.2Tilt/trim experiences...LUDWIG::CAPALDIThu May 11 1989 06:5039
    Hello,

    I have a tilt/trim mechanism on a Mercrusier 260.  I had problems
    with it, and a shop had told me to tap lightly on the top of the
    motor with a small hammer. (Not a BFH!!!).

    The system I have is a hydraulic system and it uses an impeller setup.

    Well, this didn't help and what happened was that I ended up pulling
    the hydraulic motor and taking it apart.

    What was inside was only one brush, the other one had worn totally
    away and was riding on the wire alone!!! This is why I had no
    rotation of the motor at all.

    The rotor had to be turned where the brushes made contact with it
    and I had to get a new cap assembly which held the brushes also.
    This was about $35.

    I put everything back together and it didn't work because the
    impeller fell out of the shaft. I had to take apart the oil resevior
    and line up the impeller on the shaft before putting it back together.

    Boy was I glad when it worked fine, and I have had no problems ever
    since!!!

    If this is the setup you have and you want to ask me any more
    particular questions, feel free to write directly to me through
    VAXmail.

    BTW, Ray, did you get a chance to try out some of the ideas with
    cleaning up the fiberglass as discussed in note 363??? I haven't
    yet, but I will reply to that note when I do.

    Good luck,

    Al
