353.0. "Water-Skiing on ESPN" by DONVAN::DECAROLIS (H2OSKI) Thu Apr 27 1989 19:52

Just in time to get us psyched.....

    Water-Skiing - ESPN - 4/29 - 10:00 p.m.

This is a pre-recorded tournament that took place in Orlando,
April 15th of this year. I wonder if this is the start of
    ESPN's "Hot Summer Nights"...?

Looks like the women's pro tour has a newcomer and she's
dangerous! Kristi Overton won the women's slalomn event
against Deena Mapple. Not bad for her first time on the tour.

There seems to be more hot-dogging slalom going on these
days, ESPN had some good clips of Tony Klarich mule-kicking
and doing other fun looking stuff. Hey Rick, I knew that
killer Nautique wake was good for somethin'! :>)

OK, I'm pscyhed now.. Gimmee my skiis! (water skis, that is)

353.6I cant wait to see the Worlds.BINKLY::SMITHThu Nov 01 1990 14:0024

    Jeanne,

Friend of mine flew down to watch the Worlds and video taped
some of it. I do not remember seeing any dock starts :-(

But I did see Mike Sieple break( I should say crush) the World
record for jumping, I think we went 76-78 ft. breaking the record
by about 4-6 ft. Ron Scarpa STARTS his trick run with TWO consecutive
forward flips. I gues he figured he would get those easy tricks
down first. :-) I do not know which of the days ESPN is going to
be showing. Mike's world record jump was on Saturday in the prelims
as well as some of the better trick and jump runs.

As for wake slalom I did not see any, but you only really need to
see Brian Fox (16 yrs old). I think he has the world record of about
11 wakes in 15 seconds. The kid weighs probably 140 lbs and skies
    at 40 - 42 mphs.

I am definitley looking forward to seeing ESPN coverage, it is
almost never that you get to see barefooting on TV.

    Get those VCR's programed,
    Mike
353.7Report on the World Barefoot ChampionshipsROGER::GAUDETNothing unreal existsTue Nov 06 1990 12:1521
Hey, how 'bout them 'footers, eh? Unbelievable! The stuff they do at 40+mph
is really something to see. Got it on tape, and will be looking over some of
the stunts ... over and over and...

Congrats to Rick Powell on winning the men's overall and Jennifer Calleri for
taking the woman's overall title. The USA pulled out another team title as
well. Great effort by all skiers.

For you folks that have been to Seipel's (particulary in Fla.), how about that
Amy Lawler?!? Looks like she's been training hard, 'cuz she took the jump title
(not surprising) and did really well in both wakes and tricks. And, of course,
a high five goes to Mike Seipel for setting yet another jump record (pending,
but expected to be approved) of 72.8 feet (I think that was it) in the
preliminaries. And what a crash on his third jump in the finals. Only Seipel
could do it so gracefully! "Fly like the birds," isn't that what he said? :-)
Wasn't that Casey Scalise on the beach congratulating him after the jump finals?

And for those who saw the show, how about that scum line on the front of the
Barefoot Nautique, eh? :-) Oooo, get out the scrub brush...

...Roger...
353.8Wish I could have been thereDONVAN::DECAROLISJust HIT ItTue Nov 06 1990 12:5431

Great stuff! I couldn't get over Siepel's style coming
off the jump. He leans forward like he's about to take
a dive, then at the last minute gets his feet in front
of him for the landing....I was hoping the commentators
would explain why he jumps this way, I don't think they
knew. That twice I've seen Siepel catch a toe at the
jump and recover unhurt. He should just tape his toes
    to his knees :>).

Scarpa Scarpa! Gutsy guy doing those front flips at
the beginning of his trick run. And didn't he say
something about "Boy I'm sure glad I was able to do
    all this behind a C.C."! :>)

It's amazing how fast they perform their tricks,
unlike slalomn tricking, no comparison. I had never
seen the one-foot 360's before, something new?

You were right Mike S., there weren't any flying reverse
starts, but I did notice an unusual start by the first
    footer.

Was that Mr. "Sound-Check" from BI congradulating Mike Siepel?
    Looked like him.

    Gee....I didn't see any booms. :>) :>)

353.9Great coverageTOOK::MERSHONRic - LAT/VMS EngineeringTue Nov 06 1990 13:4739
Exciting tournament and fantastic coverage. Kudos to ESPN for
providing us with great camera angles. That was the best
televised tournament I've ever seen. They must have had cameras
	up on cranes.

I was talking to Pete at Baert Marine in Plaistow the other day
and he knows someone who went to Jacksonville (as a spectator).
Seipel's new jumping technique was one of the big talks of the
tournament. It may revolutionize the event. Geeze, when the
world record is broken by 4 feet, why wouldn't it?

It would have been nice to see Scarpa pull out an overall. He's
been to so many of these tournaments and played second fiddle
quite a few times. If anyone's worked hard for it, it's him!
He made those front flips look so easy!!

I noticed a lot more trickers doing the one foot turns as well
Jeanne. I have the 1988 barefoot nationals on tape, and the
only skiers I recall doing those tricks are Powell and Merit.

The start performed by the Aussie skier (mate!) was a backwards
tumble-up to one foot. The one foot backward start is the hardest
of all, even harder than a back toe or front toe. The commentator
mentioned that he did the highest point start. I actually think
more points can be scored if that start is done flying off the dock.

And yes, Jeanne, that looked like Joe "SOUND CHECK" Momma to me
	too! Imagine, water-skiing groupies! :-)

Who did they interview that said barefooting didn't hurt your
feet and you only needed 30-35 mph? OK, let's make the sport
appealing to the public, but let's be realistic. I did agree
with the guy about the burning arches on glass calm water!
	YOUCH!

Here's to burnin' up the arches in 1991!

353.11My VCR is out of order. :^(SETH::WHYNOTYNOTTue Nov 06 1990 15:0110
Yup, Quite the event! I think Mike must have adopted the "Sammy
Spring" when coming off the jump in order to gain the extra few feet.
Apparently it's working, but he lookes *awfully* upright when he hits
the ramp. (probably why he's catchin' his toes.)
The two interviews they did with Mike; The first one he looked pretty
nervous, hiding behind his Oakleys. But after he won, he seemed to
lighten up quite a bit "...Fly like the birds" indeed!
    Doug
    What's that Joe_soundcheck_momma stuff. Someone I didn't meet when I
    didn't go to BFI North?
353.12DONVAN::DECAROLISJust HIT ItTue Nov 06 1990 16:3521

    Doug,

Joe is some guy that happened to be walking by BI last June,
was wearing Oakleys, and Mike asked him if he'd like to drive
a bunch of barefooters around for the afternoon! :>)

So he did, but he was adamant about getting a music fix
during "down-time", so to speak. I think he's in Hot
Rockin' Feet II jumping off a bridge or something.

Ric, after watching that show didn't you feel like
getting out there once last time?! Or did you put
your feet away till 91?! :>)

I did hear that fellow say barefootin' could be
done at speeds 30-35, but the pull had to be constant.
He should have added "depending on your body weight".

    Jeanne

353.13One last time?TOOK::MERSHONRic - LAT/VMS EngineeringTue Nov 06 1990 17:4726
Done for the season? I certainly hope not! I'd like to get
out one last time, and it just might be possible...:-) And
if I don't get out, maybe Reg would at least let me ride around
with his boom in the back of my vehicle all winter! What do
	ya say Reg?!

Doug, I noticed that Mike was a bit out of sorts too. It was
strange, 'cause he didn't seem himself to me, in either
	interview. Did anyone else notice?

I wonder of the accident he had over the summer has shaken
	him up a bit...

Joe's a nut! Every time a skier hit the end of his/her run
or fell, Joe felt compelled to tune out for the time it took
to get back to the skier! He was fun!

All this flack about hangin' up the feet for the season...so,
uh, who's gonna take me skiin'?!?!?!?

Does anyone have HRF II who could make me a copy? :-)

	Ski ya,

	-ric.

    Yay Roger and Doug,

I'll make sure to take many photos, as I'll be
there for both the semi's and finals. If I can scoop
up any *free* posters at the show, I'll make sure to get
extras, maybe with autographs on them.

When I last saw the competition in 87', it was only
a four-buoy course, you blinked and the run was over,
these pros are very fast! I'm hoping there's a 6-buoy

    Jeanne,

When are you going down to FLA. ??? I am leaving
on April 2nd and returning on April 13th (evening).
I am flying into Ft. Myers spending 4 days there,
a couple in West Palm Beach, a couple in Orlando,
and the other time we are just going to wing it.
I am going to be with three other friends. Not sure
how much waterskiing I will get in, we are mainly going
down to play golf, go to the beach and a little Disney/Epcot.

I don't know what you paid for airfair but we got great deals.
You can go round trip for $180 - $200 depending on the days
you travel. At that price I might be going back there soon.

I wish I would have known they were going to be skiing I would
have tried to talk my friends into one more day. But I will
have a good part of Saturday morning to try to get over and see
some skiing. We do not leave until around 5:00 Saturday night
    (April 13) out of Orlando.
Please let me know some more details.
