Can anyone tell me what the anodes on a motor (gas or electric) are for. I have an electric MinnKota that has them and I am looking at a Yamaha outboard, which the literature says has anodes. Are you suppose to replace them. How do you know when? Thanks Ed

Ed The anodes are of a sacrifical nature. They are installed to prevent crosion (sp) of your outboard. They are more subceptable to electrolysis than the Alum. or Bronze. You will know when to replace them when you noticed that they have corroded to the point that they are about to fall off. On an out board, like your Yamaha the skeg anode also serves as a tourqe stablizer and you will notice pulling in the steering as it wears away. Adjust new skeg anodes very slightly in the direction of the pull. ie: pulls starbord adjust to starbord in small 1 deg increments. You also have anodes on the tilt assy which should last longer as they are larger. Do not paint the anodes as they will not do there job. good luck Walt

IF YOUR RUNNING IN SALT WATER THEY MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED ONCE A YEAR. BUT THERE CHEAP TO REPLACE AND CAN BE A BITCH TO GET OFF!!

replacing an anode is a judgement call. they may look ok, but they may have already given up the sacrificial materials and still look good. if your in saltwater a lot, it may be best to change them each season. if you do most of your boating is fresh water, i doubt you'll see much wear, unless your running a boat with a battery in it, then possibly you may see some degradation. happy zincing, jim.
