310.0. "Electric Trolling Motors" by ROBOAT::HEBERT (Captain Bligh) Mon Mar 20 1989 11:17

My friend's Electra-Pal trolling motor broke last season. It still runs, but
the variable speed control in inoperative; it always runs at just a bit below
full speed.

I opened it up "just for a quick look". It uses a heavy transistor in the
power head (with a zener diode and a couple of resistors) as a driver for a TO-3
power transistor that is mounted right on
the motor body. In other words, the main transistor is water-cooled. I haven't
seen any other trolling motor that does this.

The name plate says ELECTRA-PAL MODEL 0021 JETCO EL PASO, TEXAS.

I called directory assistance in El Paso, and the company is no longer listed.
Naturally.

Anyone ever hear of Electra-Pal? Anyone have any experience trouble-shooting
one like this?

Note 3.1306 Boat Sale Ads Here... 1306 of 1307

    Wanted Information

I was wondering if anyone could help me with some information on
a Big Electric Trolling Motor that mounts to the Outboard motor that
    is mounted on the boat.

I saw an ad in a boat magazine for a Neptune Electric Trolling Motor,
they say it is new this year, and they sell it for trolling. You
attach it to the motor, it fits above the prop on the outboard motor.

It comes in different sizes for different size boats. It also has to
have a 12 volt or 24 volt battery to attach to depending on what size.

The one my husband and I were looking at was for a 12 volt battery and
it says a 34 lb thrust. I called the company, and they didn't have
much information on it. All they said was they recommend you use a 100
amp or deep cycle battery, not a regular car or marine battery.

    So, my questions are:

    	1) How fast or what speed can a 34 lb thrust go. As what size
regular outboard motor do you compare a 34 lb thrust to.

    	2) Where do you get a 100 amp or deep cycle battery, and how
    	   much does one cost.

    	3) How long will this motor last, a couple hours, 3 hours, 4 or
    	   what.

    	4) Has anyone heard of this type of trolling motor, Has anyone used
this type before and does anyone know if you can purchase one
around the area, instead of thru a magazine.

I would appreciate any information anyone can give.

    Thanks

Not a direct answer, but it might help you to find an answer.

a)	Some/ mayvbe most of what you ask can probably be gleaned from
the specs of "regular" electric trolling motors.

b)	Depends on your boat size and weight, but now that the water is
warming up (isn't it ?) get in the water where its shallow and try
pushing your boat along with about a 34 lb shove - this is about the
weight of a 5 gallon gas jug (say ~30 for the gas, 4 for the jug).
Not very fast, eh ? but it might be what you want for fishing or
just to hold you against a light current. Come to think of it, I have
an electric trolling motor somewhere that you can borrow.

310.334 lb thrust electric = about 2hpKOLFAX::WHITMANAcid Rain Burns my BassMon Apr 20 1992 14:2715
As I recall a 34 lb thrust electric trolling motor will develop about
2 hp. As mentioned in the previous reply, how fast you can go with it depends
on a lot of things, boat size, hull design, wind, current, how much power is
left in the battery(ies). You can get the deep cycle batteries at Sears, or
any other battery dealer (not likely to find one at the local service station
though). They run from around $50 to $90 depending one capacity. The notes
conferences devoted to fishing have a lot more information (e.g. WAHOO::FISHING)

I've seen the ads for the trolling motor that attaches to the outboard, but
I haven't figured out why I would want one. Is it just the convenience of
being able to steer it with from the helm? I'd also think you'd have a problem
with the outboard if the trolling motor prop was in the water increasing the
drag...
