309.0. "JOHNSON 135 STARTING PROBS" by GIDDAY::BOWMAN () Mon Mar 20 1989 00:02

DOES ANYONE HAVE A TRICK TO START JOHNSON 135 1975 MODEL
I HAVE TO USE A SPRAY OF EASYSTART FIRST THING IN THE
MORNING AFTER THAT IT RUNS OK AND GENERALY STARTS FINE
    WHEN ITS WARM

BUT IF IT STALLS DURING THE DAY EVEN WHEN WARM
I HAVE TO USE SPRAY AGAIN

ITS USED FOR WATERSKIING AND SO IS STOPPED AND STARTED
QUITE OFTEN DURING THE DAY I FEEL THAT IF I COULD GET
OVER WHATEVER PROBLEM IS CAUSING IT TO BE HARD TO START
FIRST THING IN THE MORNING IT WOULD BE OK
    ANY HINTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED
PS ITS IN A REASONABLY WARM CLIMATE (NSW AUSTRALIA)
    THANKS

If I read you correctly, you're saying that if you shut it off it will
restart ok, but if it stalls it will not restart. It sounds as if you've
got a fuel problem, the carbs are either flooding or they are starved
for fuel. When the motor finally restarts, does it give a large cloud
of black/blue smoke? If it does it's probably flooding, if there's no
smoke it's probably starved.

Even if you're not a carb expert there are several things you can do
before bringing it to an "expert".

1) Check the fuel system ventilation. If vacuum is building up in the
tank, eventually the fuel pump will not be able to keep up and the
engine will quit. It will restart eventually when the tank comes
   back to atmospheric pressure.

2) Replace the fuel filter and spark plugs..

3) Check the fuel line for kinks, cracks, and restrictions.

4) Remove the plugs from the carb float bowls and drain the carbs. Watch
   for water and/or dirt.

5) Check the choke(s) for proper operation. Make sure they close when
the engine is cold and open when it starts.

6) Check engine operating temperature. If it is running hot it may be
boiling the fuel in the float bowls, or experiencing vapor lock. This
could also cause difficulty starting when cold, if the fuel boiled off
after the last time you shut it down.

If all of this fails, it's time to find a good repair shop. Unless you
know what you're doing and have the equipment to resynchronize the carbs
you're best off not messing with multiple carbs yourself. I used to work
for a Porsche-Audi dealer, and the most screwed up cars (& expensive repairs)
we saw were the ones the owners tried to fix on their own first.

Hope this helps,

Rick W.
309.2THANKS FOR SUGGESTIONSGIDDAY::BOWMANMon Mar 20 1989 22:249
    THANKS FOR THE ADVICE
    I HAVE DONE SUGGESTIONS 1,2,3,5,
    AND WILL TRY SUGGESTIONS 4,6
IVE ALWAYS HAD THIS PROBLEM SINCE REBUILDING THE MOTOR BUT
AM ABLE TO RESYNC CARBYS REASONABLY EASILY THEIR A LOT EASIER THAN
MULTIPLE CARBS ON CARS.BOTH CARBS WERE CHECKED A WHILE BACK AND
WERE OK ITS JUST SO PUZZLING AND THERES NO EXCESSIVE SMOKE WHEN
IT DOES RESTART.AS YOU SUMMIZED IT IS ONLY WHEN IT STALLS AND IN
THE MORNING I HAVE THIS PROB. THANKS////REG

Sounds to me like the fuel supply is running back to the tank and
siphoning off the carbs. Check for an air leak very small one somewhere
on the inlet side of carbs . Maybe a bad o-ring in the gas hose.

      Good Luck'

    almost instantaneously
i replaced them after i noticed they were getting hot during
    cranking
    thanks for the help
