293.0. "Blue Fin or Sea Nymph" by GEMVAX::VIENS () Wed Mar 08 1989 14:19

    My husband wants a boat that can be used for both fresh and salt
    water fishing, I want a boat that I can relax on.

    We've looked at 18-foot Blue Fin and Sea Nymphs and they
    seem appropriate for what we want, but since we're new to boating
    we're unsure. Anyone have any info on either of these two boats?
    If not specific info, how about pointing me in the direction of
    a Consumer Reports type thing for boats?

    Thanks,

    Jessica

    No specific data but I do have a humble opinion on Blue Fin. I
    looked at a fishing model a couple years ago at the boat show.
    The salesman was telling me that the craftsmanship was unsurpassed
    ... made by Mennonites in Ohio and a bunch of other baloney. But
    the livewell cover wouldn't fully close and the thin carpeting was
    coming up in spots and it had a Force motor (see notes ?.*) and
    the aluminum was thinner than anything else I looked at and I felt
    an overall sense of corners cut. I think Sea Nymph would be a better
    way to go but if you can find dealers locally, look into other makes,
    then narrow it down to two.

293.2You pay for what you get or visa versaPACKER::GIBSONWed Mar 29 1989 12:2018

    The Blue fin is made by Sea Nymph co. it's a price line. For a while
    1986-1987 to be exact. Blue fins aka sea nymphs where made under
    the market name of forester! Not a price line!

    No mater what the make is, be sure to look for the quality of
    construction. If as you noticed they skimp on the visuals like carpet
    you can be pretty sure the hull is not much better.

    Don't confuse this with the boat being "Bare Bones" you may find
    that the price is the same but you "get less?" Thats due to higher
    quality of construction in what counts. You can allways add extras
    later as you want or can afford them.

    I can't say much for the force motor so I won't.

293.3Looking for info on Blue Fin boats....MPGS::BRODEURWed Apr 03 1996 16:5415

    A friend of mine is looking around for a new fishing boat. He looked at
    a few models from "Blue Fin Yacht's" and asked my opinion. I am a
    sailor and don't know too much about fishing boats so I figured I pose
    the question to you folks. Although its B. F. YACHT's these boats were
    all in the 18' to 21' range.

    o Anyone heard of Blue Fin?
    o Well built/reliable boat?
    o Priced well among it competitors?
    o Anybody have any personal experience with them?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Paul

293.5My Blue Fin is GREAT!!!MPOS02::ZWIRTZIF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX ITSat Jun 08 1996 22:3817
    I have owned a 16 ft. 1982 Blue Fin with a 80hp Merc. for 12 years. It
    has performed flawlessly for me. I have put it through the ringer, with
    fishing trips to Canada every year, and spending the weekends pulling
    skiers, and tubers. I bought the boat used in 1984, and am selling it
    this year, and going to a 1996 Mirrocraft, with a 115hp Tohatsu. The
    dealer says I should get 4-5 K for the package, and I paid 5,000 for
    it, so I'm happy. I just hope the new boat, and motor are as good. I
    ordered the new boat with a 90hp Merc, but the dealer did not have one
    in stock, and offered me the 115 Tohatsu at the same price, and said if
    I'm not happy with it after 60 days, bring it back, and he will give me
    the Merc. He also put it it writing. He says he has done this on a lot
    of boats, and only had one person say he didn't want the Tohatsu.

    Any comment, good or bad
