246.0. "Uniflite Boats" by WR2FOR::DODDS_JA () Tue Jan 24 1989 16:55

    I just read in note 242 that Chris Craft bought Uniflite in 1981.
    I am currently looking at a used Uniflite and would like some input
    as to their worthiness. The one I am looking at is 36 to 38 feet
    in length with twins. Any comments will be appreciated

246.1EXCELLENT BOAT...TYCOBB::J_BORZUMATOWed Jan 25 1989 11:069
    THE UNIFLITE LINE OF BOATS WAS OF EXCELLENT QUALITY. THEIR
    HULLS ARE AS CLOSE TO BULLET PROOF AS ONE CAN COME. ONE
    DRWABACK, THEY USED A FIRE RETARDANT IN THEIR RESIN, AND THIS
    IS BELIEVED TO BE THE CAUSE OF SOME OF THE BLISTERING PROBLEMS
    WE HAVE TODAY. ONE THING YOU DONT SPECIFY IS THE YEAR OF THE
    BOAT YOUR LOOKING AT, WITH THIS WE COULD PROBABLY GIVE
    YOU MORE INFO.

    I have a 79 Uniflite Sport Sedan (32 ft) and I love it. Absolutely
    maximum quality everything. They made all the same tradeoffs I would
    have made if I were designing the boat. Example- zero teak outside,
    total teak inside. If you've ever tried to maintain exterior teak,
    you'll know what I mean. I can't understand why anyone ever buys
    an Egg Harbor.

    A bonus I realized after I bought the boat- anyone who buys a
    top-of-the-line toy like this new won't be stingy about throwing
    money into it later- the original owner put in every top end accessory
    you could imagine on my boat. Since accesories don't add much to
    the market price of a used boat, I got an incredible bargain.

    I have heard the rumors about blistering as well. There is no evidence
    of any on my boat. However, I would look carefully if I were you.

    One last note- there are tradeoffs. Since the boat is built like
    a tank, it is very heavy for it's size. That means a lower top end
    and more fuel usage.
