239.0. "MERC CATHODE HELP" by GRANMA::WFIGANIAK () Wed Jan 18 1989 11:28

I NEED SOME INFO. IT SEEMS THAT MY BOAT IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE
YARD THAT HAS A SCORCH MARK ON THE THE HULL JUST ABOVE
THE CATHODE. THE FOLKS AT THE MARINA HAVE CHECKED IT
AND TOLD ME ITS OK. SO THE QUESTION IS WHY ?

I've worked with Mercathodes - tell me what you mean by a 'scorch
    mark' about the cathode?

THE MARK LOOKS LIKE WHEN YOU PUT A MATCH UP TO A PEICE
OF GLASS. 90% OF IT SANDS OFF WHEN I DO THE BOTTOM,BUT
YOU CAN STILL SEE WHERE IT WAS. THE BOAT GOES IN THE
WATER IN APRIL AND STAYS UNTIL NOVEMBER. I DO HAVE A
STANDARD OUT DRIVE ZINC AND DAMAGE TO IT IS USUALLY
MINIMUAL. BTW THE MARK IS ABOUT AN INCH ABOVE THE CATHODE
IT LOOK TO ME LIKE IT IS ARCING BACK TO THE HULL. IS THIS
    WHATS SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN ?

it sounds as if it may be arcing back up into/onto some ground point
    just above the anode.

what's supposed to happen is this...you're setting up a very small
current between the cathode and anode of the system...this current
runs through the zincs as 'contact' points, which points are to
be sacrificed before more valuable metal pieces.

first check to see that the entire circuit has not shorted out (which
shorting may have been slightly violent thereby causing the scorching).
if it did short, determine short and correct. do all this while
the battery is completely disconnected from EVERYTHING.

make sure that there are no loose electrical connections that have
separated from the wires as they run through the hull just before
they connect to the actual water-immersed metal...that could/would
    also cause a short.

also, do not sand, paint, or coat in any way either the cathode
or anode...this makes the pieces inoperative, necessitating replacement
    of the external zincs.

    RE:239.3
Thanks for the tip on the short. She is still under wraps probally
until March. I'll go over it and let you know what I find.
    Thanks again
