196.0. "Mercruiser 230 Alternator" by NAC::SWEET (Capt. Codfish. Desperatly seeking Charlie) Thu Oct 27 1988 16:36

A call for help to my boating noting friends...

To make a long story short, I have traded my chris for a Grady White
sailfish 25 but in between putting the deposit down and closing
on the grady the alternator in the Chris siezed up due to salt
    water corrosion.

I called around and noone would rebuild the korean made alternator
off my 230 hp (305 GM block) mercruiser. I was quoted around $300
for a new one from mercruiser. So I bought a prestolite (sp) from
ward marine ($120) that looked like the right one. Well after hooking it
up it looks as though it was not. Something fried in the ingnition
system and now when you turn the key nothing happens at all.

The old alternator has a built in voltage regulator and so does
the new one. There are two additional wires that went to the
alternator other than the two standard large gauge wires. One
of the wires is always hot and the other is hot only when the
key is on. After hooking these to extra wires up to the new
    alternator something cooked.

Does anyone have a shop manual for this engine? Does anyone have
a clue as to what I may have cooked to compound my problem?
I know I have left out a lot of detail but if you think you
can help give me a call at dtn 226-7613.

See note #64. The guys at Farrows rebuilt my alternator for
$80.00. The results were beautiful and from the way they
acted, they could have done it with their eyes closed. They
seem to know what they're doing.

FWIW: They rebuilt my "Prestolite" (sp) marine alternator.
    	       I'm not sure what they'll do with a not-made-in-the-USA
	       alternator.

    	Good Luck!

    Good news....

After borrowing a shop manual a fiend and I fixed the whole mess.
It turned out that what I cooked was the 20 amp ignition fuse. You
have never seen a happier guy when I found that baby cooked. For
once the 20 cent fuse protected the rest the big buck electronic
components. The old alternator was a korean made Mondu (sp). There
were pictures of it in the manual and the wiring diagram with some
good deductive logic explianed how to hook up the prestolite in
the correct manner. So for $120 I am out of the mess entirely and
I can turn in the Chris with a clear concianse (sp?) and
close on the grady...come on spring!
