| Rich,
Try Portside Marine, Danvers, MA. Its a family run business, you
should talk to Ron LeBlanc, who is the owner. I had a good first
time experience with these people.

179.2 | does gearcase lube = 90 weight oil | HPSCAD::WHITMAN | Acid rain burns my BASS | Thu Jun 08 1989 14:32 | 16 |
| This seems like the best candidate for a lower unit question.
I have a 2hp Evinrude engine that I pulled the lower unit off last night.
The engine is little more than a toy. I had it into itty-bitty pieces (all
20 or so of them including the bolts) and I think it went back together ok.
My question is the gear case oil. The owners manual (I don't have a shop
manual for it) indicates I'm supposed to use OMC gearcase Lube. The stuff that
ran out of the fill/drain hole (there's only one in this engine) appeared to
me to be 90 weight oil just like I'd use in any standard auto transmission.
Does anyone think I'd screw up anything if I used the 90 weight oil instead
of the special stuff sold by my local OMC dealer????

179.3 | Kmart has OUTBOARD gearcase oil! | CSMET2::CHACE | let's go fishin' | Thu Jun 08 1989 14:47 | 6 |
| You can buy QUARTS of outboard gearcase lube at Kmart for less than
half of what the average boat yard charges AND it's MADE for outboards.
The difference may be slight, but if it's available at a good price,
why not use the right stuff.

| A Mercruiser dealer recomended Amalie 85 weight gear lube for the
lower end, said he had never had a problem with it.

Re: .2
I have a similar egg-beater type outboard for my punt and have
used Duckhams SAE 90 oil for years with no apparent ill-effects.
It comes in a thing like a tooth-paste tube and is sold
especially for outboards. From the writing on the tube though,
it seems to be the same stuff they use for car transaxles.
