170.0. "Power Trim & Tilt repair on Volvo I/O" by RICKS::MCFADDEN () Wed Sep 28 1988 09:33

    Have a friend who just bought a Bayliner with a Volvo Penta motor...I
    know, exactly what everyone seems to be against. It is a 1984 engine
    and he is having a problem with the power tilt. We took it out
    this weekend and it ran very well until we were ready to put it
    back on the trailer and we could not get the power tilt thing to
    work. He checked it out last night and the switch seems fine.
    He's located the motor to the power tilt etc.....now does anyone know
    what to look for. Also need to know the a good place for parts/service
    in the Worcester area.

    thanks in advance/karen

170.1Relays??SETH::WHYNOTWed Sep 28 1988 10:068
    I believe there are two relays in that system, a tilt up and a tilt
    down. I also think that they are the plug in type, so you can swap
    them to get the outdrive up and be sure of the problem. As far as
    dealers go, Oxbow marina is a bayliner dealer and they stock these
    parts.
    Good luck,
    Doug

	.1 IS CORRECT ABOUT CHECKING THE RELAY, BUT I'M NOT SURE THAT ALL MODELS
	OF VOLVO OUTDRIVES HAVE SEPERATE RELAYS FOR UP AND DOWN. MINE IS A 290
	AND I BELIEVE IT HAS ONLY ONE (I'LL CHECK THIS WEEKEND). I HAVE ALSO
	EXPERIENCED SIMILAR PROBLEMS IN THE PAST. THE FIX WAS SIMPLY CHECKING
	AND CLEANING THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS TO THE RELAY AND PUMP. YOU MAY
	ALSO CHECK THE TILT-ANGLE SENSOR MOUNTED ON TOP. IF IT IS REGISTERING
	IN THE UP POSITION, THE POWER TRIM SWITCH WILL NOT OPERATE, BUT THIS
	SHOULDN'T STOP YOU FROM LIFTING THE DRIVE ALL THE WAY UP. I THINK THE
	MOST LIKELY PROBLEM IS WITH THE CONNECTIONS. I HOPE THIS HELPS.

	REGARDS,
	DAVE
