I believe the Maxum boats are yet another product of Brunswick.
They are very similiar, if not exact copies of their Bayliner line.
Same hull design and even same power plants I believe. OMC i/o's
and Force o/b's. The 16 ft probably has the 85 HP Force. I believe
Maxum offers those little extras you won't find in Bayliners. A
lot of bells and whistles in the interior. Compare them to a Bayliner
if you get a chance and you'll notice a LOT of similiarities.

| Actually I stopped by to cure my curisutry... the 16 ft has a 50hp
(rated max at 55). You have to go the 17' to get the 85 hp. Same
as bayliner. The differnece between bayliner and maxumm is little
touchs - slightly better carpet is about all i could see!

HI,
Advice time!!!! Does anyone have any info. about a 1989 MAXIUM.
I am looking into buying one next month. It's 17'9' in length, 85
hp outboard, and the price is $9200.
This is my first boat and this is a major step for my wife and
I. I would like to hear some pros and cons about this boat. Unless
someone has a better offer out there for a boat about the same size
but at a cheaper price.

150.5 | Maxum may not be Bertram, but are they really Bayliner? | SMVDV1::JGUNNERSON | JLG | Fri Jun 23 1989 14:04 | 12 |
| Is it possible that the Maxum may have the same hull shape, but that it
is built better? I picked up a Maxum brochure that claims that their
hulls are hand-laid fiberglass. I've never heard any bad claims about
Bayliner's scientifically designed hull shape from a functional
standpoint, only from a build quality standpoint. While it is certainly
posssible that there are no real differences between the Maxum and
Bayliner hulls, I wonder if it is just as possible that there are
differences that can't be seen from the outside.

150.6 | Escorts and Lincolns are both built by Ford !!! | STAFF::CHACE | let's go fishin' | Fri Jun 23 1989 16:47 | 18 |

ANY boat that's built by hand will have variations from boat to
boat, by the very nature of it being built by hand! Even the boats
built with chopper guns - are still built by hand (someone's holding
that chopper gun!). The big difference is - is there enough margin
of safety so that the day to day variations don't every go below
the threshold of safety (or good boatbuilding) If the Maxxum is
built at a different location or on a different assembly line -
it could EASILY be a MUCH better boat. It doesn't REALLY matter
WHO OWNS the company, what matters is how WELL do they want to make
the boat? What kind of reputation are they trying to build? Usually
SOME small aspects of different products made by the same company
are the same or similar, but they can make them as good (or as bad)
as they want.
Judging from the way Maxxum represents their boats, I'd say they
are a definite step up in quality from Bayliner.

150.7 | Yes, but some will tell they are same (Escort and Lincoln) | SMVDV1::JGUNNERSON | JLG | Fri Jun 23 1989 17:22 | 26 |
| Kenny, I am in agreement with you, that is why I posed the question. I
am hoping that someone has read something on Maxum that would explain
the relationship. There have been several people with the sentiment
that since the Maxum is similiar in appearance to the Bayliner and that
they are both owned by the same parent company that they must be the
same boat. For the reasons you give I am not so sure that that is true.
It may be, and it may not, I'd like to know and I haven't found an
answer in my readings yet.
One possibility I see is that Brunswick introduces a line of boats that
fills gap (in both quality and price) between the price-leader Bayliner
brand and the other more expensive (like Sea Ray) brands they sell.
Maybe like GM positions Oldsmobile between Chevrolet and Cadillac. Such
a boat is still being built to a price, albeit a higher one, so it
still won't be top quality, but quality will be improved to match its
price.
Some people are accusing Brunswick of painting Bayliners maroon, adding
different trim, and calling them Maxums and charging more money based
on an illusion of greater quality (called cheating in some cricles) and
I'm simply trying to determine whether or not it is true.
BTW - this isn't because I am really down on Bayliners, I am not,
I just like to know the truth when accusations fly.

150.8 | Trying to help myself | SMVDV1::JGUNNERSON | JLG | Mon Jun 26 1989 14:23 | 34 |
| I picked up a Bayliner brochure on the Capri line of boats (that line
seems the most similiar to the Maxum brand line) and closely examined
the shapes of the boats to see what I could see. All that I can state
is that a Maxum is not a Bayliner, in terms of shape, painted maroon.
(I can't address the issue of build quality based on pictures.)
Differences that I observed:
While the hulls have similar bottom and forward shapes, the sides
and sterns are quite different in shape, enough that same molds
couldn't be used for both hulls.
The decks and upper hulls are quite different in shape.
Side glass in completely different, harder to tell re. the windshield.
Helm stations are different, use different instrumentation.
Maxum uses Mercruiser stern drives, Bayliner OMC, both use Force OBs.
Finally there may be a difference in size, but I am too sure about
that. Bayliner reports centerline length while Maxum prints overall
length. Therefore there are no Maxum models that share the same
length with a similiar sized Bayliner, whether this is due to a
real difference or a different spec I do not know yet.
I understand that these differences may not be significant, but they
are there, and what that means to me is that that the Maxum VS Bayliner
debate is at least one more step complicated then saying "a Maxum is a
maroon Bayliner". Since they don't seem to be the same boats on the
surface, I'd be interested in any information that says that that are
beneath the surface.

Note 967.1 need info on a 23ft Maxum 1 of 1
NEMAIL::COLVIN 20 lines 24-APR-1992 08:34
-< Maxum Info >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maxum is a subsidiary of US Marine which is part of Brunswick, one of
the two big conglomerates (OMC is the other). They are built in
Washington State. I bought a 21' bowrider runabout last Fall and am
expecting to pick it up today. I did a LOT of shopping around late last
season and felt this boat (a leftover '91 at the time the '92s were
coming out) was the best value. Maxum is one of the so-called "package"
boat makers (boat/power/trailer included). I thought it was built well
for my intended lake use and dealer was willing to deal to move the
boat. I got it from Baert Marine in Danvers, Ma. The sales manager's
name is Jack McMath and has been really a pleasure to deal with.
I paid about $15.5 k (21' boat, 260 Mercruiser, trailer, mooring cover,
stainless steel prop, etc). $16.3K sounds sort of high for a 3-year old
23' boat unless there is something special about equipment, etc. The
next size up from 21' in Maxum's now is 24'. Baert is
on Rt1, north of 128 in Danvers, also have a store in Plaistow, NH.
If I can help you further, call me at DTN:224-1569.

150.12 | Thanks Larry for the info.ex | MR4DEC::GSHAW | | Fri Apr 24 1992 11:44 | 13 |
| Thanks Larry for the info. This particular 23 footer seems to be a
package deal. The tandom trailer is the same color as the boat etc. I
have to admit, it is a sharp looking boat. the Hull is very stream line
with 6 chines, looks like it could take a beating in rough seas. As far
as the price goes, I agree with you that a 3 year old boat that size
seems a bit over priced in the day and age.
I see this boat on rt20 in east Marlboro every morning and it seems
to be talking to me when I drive by. But the good news is my wife gave
me "permission" to upgrade my 20 ft Glastron so I,m in the market.
Thanks
George

150.13 | Maxum Experience | NEMAIL::COLVIN | | Tue Jun 16 1992 10:00 | 33 |
| Now that Spring is here I have taken delivery of and launched the 21'
bowrider mentioned in .11. Previous boat was a 25 year old MFG with a
20 year old 65HP Johnson with an ailing center cylinder and no trim so,
needless to say, this is a REAL step up for my father and I.
Boat is 21' bowrider with 260 Mercruiser, rear sun pad/bucket seat
configuration. It is a leftover '91. Performance is great, pops up on
plane very quickly, 45 MPH @ 3800 RPM (I have been observing the
break-in restriction of no full-throttle until 10 hours-1.5 hours to
go). Still getting comfortable with using trim, boat really reacts to
trim adjustments. Power tilt in shallow water is VERY nice. The quality
seems good. All my issues have been cosmetic and the dealer (Baert Marine
in Danvers, Ma.) has been very cooperative. The boat went to Lake
Champlain in Vermont where it's home will be. Baert got new engine cover
and seat cushion vinyl covers to repair small damaged spots in each and
allowed me to have recovering work done by a shop in Burlington, Vt., so
I would not have to return it all the way to them in Massachusetts. They
then reimbursed me for charges.
Biggest problem has nothing to do with boat itself or dealer. A group of
seagulls has adopted it (since it was one of the first boats in the
water this year) as an occassional conference center. Cleaning guano
off a brand new mooring cover raises my blood pressure to a new record!
Anyway, we are very pleased with the boat. Working out a few minor
new-boat glitches. For instance, the bow eye works great with the winch
on the trailer but this puts it near the water-line and makes hitching
a mooring line to it from inside the boat a real balancing act favoring
those with very long arms! Very thrilling indeed doing it in large
waves! Would definitely recommend Maxum and Baert at this point, will
see how it holds up.
