142.0. "What is normal operating temperature?" by WR2FOR::DODDS_JA () Tue Sep 06 1988 19:59

    Can anyone tell me what are normal operating temperatures for crusing?
    I have a 27' cruser with a 305 V8 with OMC I/O.  When I go on short
    cruses - 1/2 hour or less I tend to run between 140 & 155, but when
    I run further it goes up to 160 - 180 and stays there. Should I
    worry about this or is this necessary. Thanks for the inputs!

142.1What type of cooling?NAC::SWEETCapt. Codfish. Desperatly seeking CharlieWed Sep 07 1988 09:077
    Fresh or raw water cooled? My raw water cooled merc 230 i/o runs
    cool. About 120 degrees at cruise and lower at idle, consider the
    fact that around here you are running 65 degree water through the
    block. If you are fresh water cooled I would guess you would run
    hotter because of less heat tranfer but that is only a guess.

142.2I run about 170 DegreesMYVAX::ONEILLWed Sep 07 1988 10:138
    I have the 4.3L OMC (V-6 175hp) in my 1988 21' Four Winns, I find that the
    temperture run about 170 degrees, regarding the cooling system question
    asked in .1 Currently OMC uses raw water for cooling.

142.3How hot is hotWR2FOR::DODDS_JAWed Sep 07 1988 11:563
    It's fresh water cooled from the delta. The water temp lately has
    been running around 74 degrees.

    not to be naive, but if your raw water cooled, your thermostat
    should control the block temp. ex. a 160 deg. therm. should keep
    the block at about 160 to 175. i'd call the manufacturer or dealer
    and ask whats normal.

	The cooling system (except the water p/u and the exhaust manifolds)
is much like a car. The "lake" is your radiator. if you have a 160 degree
thermostat, you should not exceed 160. likewise with 180 thermostat. Some
boat (mainly inboard) designs allow debris into the engine vial the water pickup.
Over time this could collect and cause an increase in your operating temp.

    For raw water cooled inboards, check the strainer inside the
    trasmission oil cooler. Mine gets debrise in it and there is
    a slight rise in eng temp as the season goes on due to constriction.

    	For the motor.. Mine is external, it hangs directly on the
    raw water intake hose coming from the bottom of the boat.??

142.8I shouldn't put Nautique parts in a Malibu anywaySETH::WHYNOTWed Sep 07 1988 21:0610
    Rick,
      Yes it is external, located between the raw water intake and the
    water pump at the motor. But you (correct craft owners) also have
    a strainer (wire mesh basket-type-thing in a clear housing) that
    catches any debrise before it gets to your oil cooler. Good idea,
    I've only seen it on Nautiques. (i.e. not a PCM item) I tried to
    order one through a CC dealer, but the intake hoses were different
    sizes, and I didn't want to use reducers in my intake line, so
    I'll just clean out the oil cooler once a year and save the 35 bucks.

    It just sounds as though your thermostat doesn't start to open until
    you really push (load) the engine and the temperature rises over
    160 degrees. Best engine operating temperatures are generally in
    the 160 to 180 degrees range. Without more information, I think
    you are O.K.

    Before you do anything expensive or a that is a nuisance, first
    ask yourself a question:

    	HOW ACCURATE IS YOUR TEMPERATURE GUAGE????

    Maybe a thermometer in the water to check the calibration might
    be needed first?

    Sounds like a thermostat that isn't closing completely. Either that,
    or yout boat has a cooling system like Roger Gaudet's...

142.12What my shop manual says...FROSTY::ANDERSENDick Andersen 264-6456 MK01-1/E10Wed Oct 05 1988 13:149
    My OMC shop manual (I have an '82 3.8L V6 IO in a 25' Allmand) says
    that raw water temp should be about 140-160 and closed cooling should
    be about 170-190. The manual has all the '82 engine combinations
    in it and the section on cooling doesn't distinguish among the engine
    types, only raw water vs closed cooling.

    BTW, mine has closed cooling and runs about 180.
