137.0. "CELEBRITY COMMENTS PLEASE" by FDCV01::LEE () Tue Aug 30 1988 17:21

I'm in the process of looking at an 18ft. Celebrity. It looks like
a real fine boat. The basic question I have is in regards to the
power plant. There are three engines 1) 130 HP four cylinder 2)
165 HP four cylinder and 3) 165 HP six cylinder. I'm concerned that
the 130 HP will not have enought power for pulling skiers, the 165
HP sounds like the right engine for me, but it doesn't seend to
be a BIG seller, and the 175 HP might be a gas HOG.

I'd like your comment regarding the power plant concerns, and general
    comment of the Celebrity itself.

    Thanks
    Dave

If its the boat I think it is then YES, it looks to be a very
well designed boat with a lot of attention to detail, but pricey !
I thought this one had the 4.3 litre GMC V6 175 HP option ??

re Power for skiers. It depends. At one end of the scale there
are some very heavy skiers behind some very small engines, they
just come up one skier at a time on two skis and drop one, no slalom
deep water starts and no doubles. I've seen 200 pounders behind
a very old 35 HP come up fairly quickly on two skis. At the other
end of the scale it seems the tournament boats (which aren't always
very fast) have about 230 HP or so as standard with options up through
330 and as high as 425 for barefooting.

I wouldn't worry that much about fuel consumption, at a guess
it takes about the same amount of fuel to get a particular boat
onto plane, either you burn less for longer or more for less time.
Once on a plane you can throttle back and the consumption should
be similar with either engine. I'd go for the higher power option
if it isn't TOO MUCH extra cash, probably work out cheaper than
wanting more power a year or two from now and realizing where your
boat is on its depreciation curve. Boats aren't like cars anyway
where you run them to work everyday. Mine gets heavy use 3 or 4
weeks of the year and if I moved up an engine size it MIGHT mean
paying $200 for gas over 3 weeks instead of $150, not a number I
would let change my mind about something. I've not counted it out,
these are guesses, but I doubt that I spend $300 a year on gas right
    now.

Did you see this boat at Denny's in Grafton ?, that's where
I saw them IF its the boat I think it is.

    	Reg

I AM LOOKING AT A 1990 CELEBRITY 180 BOWRIDER. THE QUALITY LOOKS
REAL GOOD. I KNOW CELEBRITY JUST GOT BOUGHT OUT, SHOULD THAT AFFECT
MY DECISION? IT IS THE SPORT PACKAGE THAT COMES WITH A SUN LOUNGER
AND BUCKET SEATS. HAS A 175 HP. 4.3 ENGINE. ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS
    BOWRIDER????

    I bought a Celebrity 181 1989 Bowrider with the 175 H.P. It sound like
you want the same boat. I believe you are making and excellent choice,
I'm super happy with mine. One of my neighbors is planning on
purchasing one next year. Go for it, I'm sure you will be happy.

I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THE QUALITY, OR LACK THERE OF, IN
THE CELEBRITY BOATS. I STILL DONT FEEL ALL THAT CONFORTABLE WITH
THE CELEBRITY. I GUESS IT'S BECAUSE I HAVE NOT HAD MUCH LOCAL FEEDBACK
NOR HAVE I SEEN MUCH IN THESE NOTES.
I APPRECIATE MR. LEE'S FEEDBACK BUT I STILL HAVE COLD FEET ABOUT
IT. THE BOAT LOOKS REALLY GOOD, BUT HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE SEA
RAY, REGAL, COBALT, GLASTRON ?????? WHERE DOES THE CELEBRITY FIT
INTO THE RANKING OF BOATS...HIGH END...LOW END ?????
I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS NEW 1990 MODEL THAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING AT
IS A COMPLETLY REDESIGNED MODEL 180 FROM THE LAST COUPLE OF YEAR
MODELS. IS THAT GOOD OR BAD??? HAS ANYONE OUT THERE TEST DROVE THE
1990 MODEL IF SO HOW IS IT???

137.5Info on 26 footers desiredLEDS::NELSONSun Mar 18 1990 12:2312

I am also very curious about celebrities as I am now considering
a 26 ft LOA with a 10' beam. Celebrities seem to be a bit of
an enigma. Don't hear too much about them and they're not too
many of them around. The ones I do see have big price tags
attached to them, though. Any information would be helpful.
Also, if someone could supply me with a celebrity dealership
in the NE area, that would be much appreciated.

    		Thanks,
    		Mike

137.6One boat does not a bad reputation make, and it wasn't even mine. One impression though RDF::GUNNERSONMon Mar 19 1990 16:2528
Ok, you are desperate so take this for what it is worth. I didn't reply earlier
since this is pretty feeble but here goes:

I was shopping at a Cruiser's Inc. dealerhip and saw a 1989 Celebrity cuddy
cabine cruiser of the type of boat I was interested in. It was around 23'. It
suprised that it was so new (this was in 1989 that I was there) amongst the used
boats and I wondered if it was new or used. It was used. It went in the water in
1988 and was used only a few times.

What I saw really did suprise me. The steering wheel was one of those ones with
the teak wood rim with dowled together pieces. Except they were all loose and
seemed to be coming apart. Much of the trim looked aged and worn. All the
Celebrity badges were as corroded as those on my 13 year old boat. While the
hull really looked new all the pieces attached to it appeared, tired, worn,
corroded, and loose. You'd expect this after several years in a salt environment
or after a spell with a careless owner, but this boat was still new enough that
it should have held up to all of that for a short period of time and showed a
lot less wear.

The Sea Rays, Cruisers, and even Larsons sitting there, all older, were all in
better condition in terms of wear and tear, fading, and corrosion. I wasn't
impressed. Also it was a lot smaller in size than a Larson with the same LOA
beside it.

When I relayed this to Power Squadron members they weren't surprised as the
members I talked to don't think highly of Celebrity boats I guess.

I'll have to agree with you. We went up to Lake Wini over the
weekend to look at supposedly a 26 footer with a 10 foot beam.
    What a farce. It resembled a 25 foot w/ about 8 1/2 foot beam.
The covers over the engine compartment didn't seat flush with the
cockpit. We noticed that the paint lines were ragged. Can't say
too mcuh about the quality. Keep looking.
