| RE: < Note 127.0 by ASTRO::BERNARD > -< Tragedy on Long Lake, in Maine >-
Paul,
I was up there last week and will be up there this weekend. I did
notice the marina (in brandy pond @ naples) had several jetski's out there
for rent.
We (several people in 3 boats) had a number of very close calls with
jetski's up in that area. The people there (owner's & renters) of the jetski's
did not seem to care about anyone/thing else except their amusement. One of
them came w/i 8" of hitting my boat when I was docked. Another almost hit my
friend's rig while we were in a NO WAKE zone trying to navigate under the Naples
bridge.
Personally I think people who display this kind of behavior (i.e.
constently time-after-time endangering others in their way) while using jetski's
cars, 3 & 4 wheel ATC's, boats, snowmobiles should be removed from that vehicle
for a pre-defined period of time. I manage to have fun and go very fast w/o
endangering everyone around me. It is an additional aggravation that is slowly
killing the last un-restricted (relatively) forms of recreation.
BTW, I was reading an article some months ago that talked about boaters
that would SINK jetski's that hit their boats via long, metal, gaff hooks. Alas
that didn't work either as usually the kid just asked "daddy" for another one
that had a BIGGER engine.
I can just see it now. The Massachusttess Registry (in conjunction with
the CG) issuing licences for RV operation ($5 for Mass, .01 for CG; $10 for
Mass, .02 for CG....) then the insurance companies getting their cut (with
yearly rate hikes based on proverty claims) right behind the Duke's presidential
campaign couffers with their hand in it too. ---- ARRRRRRRRRRH.

| Earlier this summer here in Atlanta at Lake Lanier a woman was floating
in a tube some distance from the shore when a jet skiier intentionally
came directly at her (to scare her?). She quickly paddeled to shore,
had a heart attack and died. The jet skiier was charged with
manslaghter. I don't recall the outcome of the court case but I
think he was convicted. Now the zinger, he looked to be in his
30's. Seems like you have some sense by that age.

Hi, Nelson,
It seems like the crazies are not just up here in our neck
of the woods. There are a lot of folks on the lake I go to who would
like to see jet-skiis go away like the 3-wheel ATV's did. I have
had no problem with them so far and my kids enjoy riding them once
in a while, but they know what will happen if they harass others
and cause problems.
Nice to hear from you, if you did not recognize the name,
you and I were on a trip to Charlotte N.C. a while back. How's
the boat running?

| Hi Paul
No I didn't notice the name. Boat is running good after some setup
work. Come down and visit sometime, we're not all crazy.
The jet skiis are generally not a problem in this lake. It is a
big lake, about 48,000 acres and 450 miles of shoreline. The problem
to me is the number of boats and lack of experience/courtesy. Lots
of big boats all going very fast in the big part of the lake thrown
in with the houseboats and sailboats putting around keeps me looking
for the small sheltered waters not crowded for good skiing.

| How is Lake Lanier this year? Seems every time I go to GA. to see
my buddy, the lake is pretty well dried up. Still a nice lake!

| Bill,
It's hanging around 10-12 feet low but for a lake that is 130+ at
full pool it still has plenty of usable water left. The lake is
pretty well marked so I've had no problem. There are something like
130 of 160 ramps open. We've been getting some rain lately so we're
holding steady now. It was dropping about 6" a week in June.

Re: .0
Paul,
I just found this conference and your note about Long Lake. Sorry
to hear about it. My family has been staying with relatives on Long
Lake since '62, it's a great place! The recent development in the
area ( last 10 years ) has really made it crowded compared to the
past. I think it's a common problem on all lakes with fast boats
and jet skiis competing for space with novice operators.
Hope to see you on the lake!
Chuck ( now on Lake Norman in NC )
