Note 852.0 Boat Recalls... or ...Hot Time in the old Marina Tonight No replies
PROXY::HART 21 lines 5-JUN-1991 17:44
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While thumbing through Consumer Reports last weekend, I was surprised
to see four different boat models listed in the 'RECALLS' section!
Surprised becaused I can't remember the last time C.R. listed a boat
under 'RECALLS'.
1263 '89-90 19'-22' Correct Craft Nautique inboard boats. Recalled
because fuel tank could leak causing fire or explosion. Same recall
as listed in NOTE 719 I believe.
2014 '90-91 17'-20' Chaparral model 1800SL, 1900SL, 2000SL boats.
Recalled because a spark from the radio receiver could ignite fuel
vapors, causing fire or explosion.
317 '89-90 23' Regal valanti 225 Sport Cruisers. Recalled because
the screw in fuel-tank hatch cover could puncture fuel line, causing
fire or explosion.
125 '87-90 Bayliner Marine yachts(gasoline powered). Recalled because
engine backfire could rupture muffler and allow water to enter boat,
causing it to sink.(at least it wont blow up!)

This may be a fine (small) distinction, but it was my
understanding that the list in .0 is the coast guard list, i.e. the
manufacturers were required to recall the boats. The list in .1 is a
consumer reports list that includes boats re-called by the
manufacturers WITHOUT the coast guard requiring it. Putting the two
lists under one topic might cause a little confusion. Either way, if
you have one - - get it fixed.

| I received an interesting letter from Malibu Boats over the weekend
regarding the recall of certain propellers made by Johnson Propeller
Company and used on Malibu Boats made between Dec '87 and July '88.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
November 1, 1991
Dear Malibu Customer,
Johnson Propeller's recall of two propeller sizes, 13 X 12 LC and
13 X 13 LC (with specific letter coding), is fast approaching OUR
DEADLINE - 12/31/91. During the past few years we have made several
attempts to retrieve these defective props and this is now our final
attempt at contacting you to exchange your boat's recall propeller.
Exchanges must be made before 12/31/91!
WE NEED YOUR HELP IN LOCATING THESE PROPELLERS! The timeframe of our
manufacture was between December 1987 and July 1988. Also, many of
you might have purchased on of these propellers from a dealer or marine
outlet. The "RECALL" propellers are stamped "OJ JOHNSON" with letters
stamped on the side of the hub: DD, EE, FF, GG, HH, II, JJ, KK, LL, and
MM/MMS. These are left hand rotation props only! PLEASE CHECK YOUR PROP
FOR THESE LETTERS AND CONTACT US AT ONCE TO INITIATE AN EXCHANGE! With
these props there is a very likely possibility that a blade will fly off,
damaging the prop shaft and possibly damaging the boat hull. This is our
final request and after December 31, 1991 JOHNSON PROPELLER COMPANY, and
MALIBU BOATS shall not be responsible for any damages done by these recall
propellers.
Recall propellers will be replaced with new ones at no cost for the
propeller or the shipping. When contact is made for an exchange, we
initiate a Call Tag with U.P.S. to pick up the defective prop from you
and deliver it to us. Exchanges are usually made within a few days. If
you sold your boat, we would appreciate your help by providing us with the
name and address of the new owner so we may contact them. Thank you if
your exchange has already been made!

| From the January 1992 Boat/US report:
70-gallon aluminum gas tanks made by Aluminum Fabricated Products
of Perry, Florida. These tanks have been installed in SportCraft,
Chris Craft, and Fountain boats since 1986.
Welded seams fail where internal baffles are attached to tank
walls, and gasoline can leak into the bilges.

About 32 Thompson runabouts have stability problems and structural
cracks:
Fisherman 200
Carrara 200
Hardtop 260
...statements from owners like, "dug into a one- to two-foot wave
and almost flipped"... "My boat handles very poorly in one-foot
waves. It leans to port..." "The boat at any speed above plane
wants to flip over and lay on its side".
