74.0. "Repair shops - Worcester/RI" by NRADM::KARL () Thu Jul 14 1988 19:19

    Hi - I live in Millbury and moor my boat in Jamestown, RI. I'm
    unhappy with the service I've been receiving at my current shop,
    and am looking for recommendations either in the Millbury -
    Worcester area, or Newport/Wakefield RI area.

    I own an older ('71) 18' bowrider with a 120 Mercruser I/O.

    I'd like to find a shop that does the following:

        1) Sticks to the original estimate.
        2) Notifies you before they go ahead and repair
           whatever they find wrong with your boat.
        3) Is reasonable. By that I mean, if they are charging
           top $$$ to work on your engine, I don't want some
           mechanic to earn while he learns on my engine.
           I was just charged four hours labor for someone to
           locate a problem (heat riser) and repair it. The
           original estimate was 3 hours, which I feel was too
           high. They should have caught the problem last April,
           had they let the engine warm up for a while.
        4) Are honest, reliable, knowledgable, courteous, etc.

        5) Quick turn around. I know that getting your boat
           repaired in the summer can take quite a while, but
           I don't want to be waiting for several weeks, especially
           in the summer.

     If anyone has any recommendations, I'd greatly appreciate them!

     Thanks, Bill

74.1How about Grafton?ROGER::GAUDETSki NautiqueFri Jul 15 1988 16:0615
    Bill...

    I've never had anything serviced there, but I've been very happy
    in dealing with the folks at Denny's Marine in Grafton, Ma. I've
    been there several times for various parts for my boat and relative's
    boats and they're very helpful. They ordered some boat cleaner
    for me that came in two days. I noticed that they work on Mercury
    outboards (saw a couple on stands all taken apart) and they're
    frequently testing an I/O in the driveway. Might be worth stopping
    in since they're essentially in your back yard. Rt. 122 & 140 in
    Grafton, on the right side heading south. They've got a Ski Nautique
    and Barefoot Nautique (whimper, whimper) in the showroom. You can't
    miss it.  1-508-839-5341.

74.2Johnson's yes, Denny's noBAGELS::MONDOUMon Jul 18 1988 13:407
    I have heard lots of good reports about Johnsons in Wickford, R.I.
    They have been very good about giving me advice when I asked. So
    far I have not actually had them do any work but I plan to have
    them service my I/O this year.

    As far as Denny's goes, I have had the misfortune of having them
    service my boat. Never again.
74.3Recommendations needed, pleaseDKAS::FEASEAndrea Midtmoen FeaseMon May 17 1993 13:129
         We, too, are looking for a good repair shop. We have a 20' C-Hawk
    with an 88 Johnson (outboard) and a Long Trailer. We live in Shrewsbury,
    and travel down 146->95->195->136 to Bristol, RI.

         We have also had problems with a couple of shops (one selling us a
    $90 trailer tire that turned out to be a recap!) and are looking for a
    reliable, knowledgeable shop.
