18.0. "Advise requested on 17' Monark" by SA1794::SCAGBOB () Mon May 23 1988 10:50

    I am in the process of purchasing a 1986 17' Monark with a 140hp
I/O motor. It has an open bow and looks to be in excellent shape.
Included in the deal is a mooring cover, conv. top, and skis /
rope ,etc. Also, it comes with an EZ load trailer. The boat has
about 30 hrs. on it. Does anyone have any info on this type of boat?
By the way, the motor is a Merc Cruiser. The person selling it said
he paid over 11 k for it. I'm getting it for 8. Think it's a good
deal, or can I do better?? Any info would be appreciated.

    Bob,

     I saw a 1985 Larson 175 Bow rider 140 I/O yesterday at a marina
in Mass. listed for $8,995.00.!! It was in terrible shape....dirty
canvas, faded paint, worn seats. The owner of the marina said he
    thinks he has it sold!

Based on the other boats I saw there....your's doesn't sound like
too bad of a deal, especially including the low hours, canvas skiis
    and line....Jim.

	I have a 1986 16' MonArk Fish-n-ski with a 1985 75 hp Mariner OB. I
paid 7K brand new for boat, motor, drive on trailer and another $1000 on
additional goodies. The boat looks sharp, but is light weight and NOT what I'd
call top quality construction. Mine tends to porpoise at about 30 mph. There
is another MonArk with the I/O, like the one you're looking at, on my lake and
the guy loves the boat. For that matter I still think I got a lot of features
for my money and given the same opportunity I'd probably do it again. My
biggest complaint at the moment is the $250 mooring cover is garbage. I'm sure
I'll be getting a new one custom made locally before the summer is over (it's
only two years old).

For whatever it's worth, MonArk is no longer in the fiberglass boat
business. They sold the molds to Cajun (for my model at least) last year. I
ordered some dash switches from MonArk last spring (1987) and they still
haven't come in. I've long since stopped expecting them.

In the central Ma area there are two dealers that carry (carried)
MonArk. Valley Marine in Winchendon/Ringe, and Performance Marine in Oxford. I
bought my boat from Char-is-Mar Marina in Coventry, R.I.

If it's what you want 'go for it', but remember there is no factory
support behind you except for the power plant.

Just want to thank you for the info.,comments,etc. on the Monark.
Trouble is I just found out the engine had a cracked block so we
cancelled the deal.(AT ONCE..) Now looking around at Searays etc.
                                                    Thanks again,
                                                         Bob

From a disinterested reader, The Stingray mentioned by someone a few
notes back sounds pretty good too. Stingray makes a very good boat.
