| Why isn't anyone responding to this?
I'll start with Mt. Washington. I went up by car (as a passenger) in 1962 and
rode the Cog Railway in 1993. I have never hiked up, and would not be up to
such a hike.
The auto road is the fastest way to go. Sometimes they let you drive your own
car up. If not, they have vehicles called stages that go up and down often.
The Cog Railway is a fun way to go up, but the main reason for doing it is
the experience.
The Cog Railway and auto road go up opposite sides of the mountain. How to
get there depends on which you are taking.
From Greater Boston:
Cog Railway: Take I-93 north (or U.S. 3 to I-293 to I-93) about 100 miles
to where it goes thru Franconia Notch. At end of notch, take route 3 north to
U.S. 302 east. Go a short distance and watch for signs for Cog Railway on left.
Auto Road: Take route of choice to I-95 north thru NH seacoast. Exit onto
route 16 north. Go about 100 miles. Route 16 goes from turnpike to limited
access two-lane road to free-access road. After going part way thru Pinkham
Notch, watch for signs for Mt. Washington Auto Road on left.
Count on the top of Mt. Washington being 30-40 degrees colder than Boston
or central MA. In other words, if it's 80 F when you start, plan on it being
40-50 F at the top. Also, the wind at the top is very strong, so it feels even
colder. Because of the cold, the auto road is only open 3-4 months of the year;
the Cog Railway has a short season too.

| What part of New England are you looking at? I live in New Hampshire
and grew up in Boston so I know tons of great places in either state...
One of the great places to visit is downtown Boston. The are places
like Harvard square in Cambridge, Haymarket, Kenmore square etc...
Most of these places are easilly accessible from Interstate-93. On the
historical note, there are always towns like Gloucester and Rockport
in Massachusettes and Salem, Massachusettes (where the famous witch
trials were held.) To get to those three towns just take I-95 (a.k.a.
Route 128) north until you see the signs for those towns. Gloucester
and Rockport are about 45 minutes north of Boston and Salem takes about
20-25 minutes from Boston. If you are around during warm weather, and
want to visit the beach, try Cape Cod. Just get on any of the major
highways near Boston and go south and follow the signs. I have been to
all of these places and found that they were very interesting sites to
see and they may be well worth the trip. If all else fails, you could
visit the DEC sites in the area..... (yeah right!)

One minor nit: Route 128 is not also I-95 for its entire length north of
Boston. Where I-95 forks off, stay on route 128 to get to Salem and Gloucester.

| Right the account is the same because Scott is here with me while I
use his account to get into the notes files. The account I normally
use hasn't been set up for it and I am too lazy to set up all the notes
stuff. So, to make things easy I just use Scott's account while he is
with me.
