    Tips that don't work:
My ex-husband once tried to quit together with 2 other friends.
They made a bet that they won't smoke again. If they did, they were
supposed to "throw" a 100 liter barrel of beer for their friends.
It did not work. All 3 of them smoked again after 2 months.
Wow, that was some party !!!!!!! ;)))))

    Trying accupuncture:
My little brother tried that one. He went to I think 4 sessions.
But..... he's back again. I think it is his mental condition that
        is not yet conditioned right.

348.4Here's what worked for meLJSRV1::LAMBRECHTThe Spirit of BavariaMon Jun 12 1995 20:5935
Here's what did work for me:

       - quitting with my ex-husband together
I tried to quit earlier, but he undermined my mental position by
asking me whether I was sick that I did not even want a cigarette.
But from the point on when I took care of both of us he, too was
not allowed to touch a "coffin nail" again. So with me in control
         it suddenly worked.

       - quitting cold turkey
It is either a NO or a YES. Trying to wind down the cigarette
         amount slowly did not work.

       - surrounding yourself with friends that don't smoke either. They're
the best support and conscious you can get.

       - making your house "smoke clean". Make it a ritual. With each
curtain you wash in order to get the smoke out you actually
         perform an act of "decontamination".

       - Throw all your cigarettes away. Don't keep any of them in your
         house.

       - Make plans what to do with the money you save. In Germany it was
quite a lot: about $3 per pack. With 1.5 pack a day and 2 persons
it gives you already $21 to spend each week.
Treat yourself to something so that you have concrete advantage.

All of the above are tricks to maintain your mental stability.
It does NOT lower the urge.
But it helps to live through it.

I have found since stopping smoking, I cough constantly!. My girlfriend
always shouting "Get a tissue, and blow your nose!". I guess that's
supposed to stop me coughing all the time?.

I took it was the lungs clearing!.

Did you know after 3 weeks of stopping smoking your Lungs ONLY start
to get the healing process started, they reckon it takes 3 years for
your lungs to return to a pink colour. Just think about all that
BLACK treacle stuff clinging to your lungs, and getting everywhere

You have little scillia in your lungs that help to keep them clean
(they look like little brushes that sweep back and forth in between the
air sacs). The scillia are wiped out when you smoke....completely gone.
Obviously, junk (tar) builds up on the walls of the lungs. When you
stop smoking, the scillia grow back and start to loosen up all that
junk on the walls of your lungs. Hence, you cought alot to get the
stuff up! The cough will go away, but it takes a while.

    Hey Chico,

that is a very good and profound scientific explanation.
You herewith are promoted to Biologie Officer.

    Something in addition:

Terrie, you will start dreaming. I had dreams of smoking filter free
cigarettes, about 5 in a row and just inhaling the smoke.... I never
had a bad conscience, because.... I realized it was only a dream.
These dreams were constantly on. At first very often, after 1 year
down to about twice a week. But still, I dreamt.
Then, after 4 years, I said: that is it, I'll have one cigarette.
And I did. A strong one. I inhaled it unscrupelously. And then.....
the urge and the dreams were gone.

I don't smoke, I never did it, and after reading waht U all said about
cigarettes I wish I won't...
When I was younger, I mean at the age to begin smoking, my group of
friends was a non-smoker one (some were smoking, but it was a minority). It's
probably why I didn't begin smoking. I think, the best way to stop is to sense
the need to stop. Meeting people who don't smoke is important, and the fact that
Terrie is taking this decision with her husband is probably the right solution.
I have got an uncle and a aunt who've been smokin for about 40 years.
One day they dicided to stop together. They managed (it's been 2 years now) and
I think they saved their life cause they seem to be in a very good health now...

				I remote U positive energy,	BenJ.	;)

> Digital Ayr will be a NO Smoking plant very shortly!!!.

Does this mean people will have to step outside to smoke? This hasn't hap-
pened yet in the Digital plants around here, but it has happened in a few other
local companies. It's a major pain in the neck when it's raining, snowing, or
freezing cold, which it is 50% of the time here.
I don't smoke, never did. In my previous job, half of my coworkers smoked, so
I got a good sense of what it means to be a smoker.
About two years ago, I read in HUMANE::DIGITAL that they were planning to
make HLO non-smoking. That is, smoking outside only AND you had to go a distance
from the building to smoke. The reason they gave for this is that if people
smoke and then step into the fab areas soon after, the smoke on their breath
contaminates the process. And that traces of smoke from the smoking rooms were
finding their way into the fabs, despite the elaborate arrangements to exhaust
smoke to the outside. I never found out if they actually put this rule into
effect.

Well, I've been in two plants that have gone non-smoking, and at those
plants, what happened was they designated rooms as "smoking rooms", so people
don't *have* to go outside to smoke. Of course, some people prefer to go
outside to smoke...the air in those smoking rooms can get pretty raunchy!

Yes, that's probably what he meant is going to happen in Ayr. Since Ayr is
not an IC fab, there shouldn't be a problem with having smoking rooms.

In KBO (facility in Kaufbeuren/Germany) the facility was turned into
non-smoking the day that I joined Digital. The only area where smoking
was allowed, was the smoking part of the cafeteria. That worked pretty
well. The caf was very big and people could go there for their breaks
and smoke. The first 3 days you could get free gum and candy in the
reception area to "satisfy your urge". ;)
Here: LJO2 is smoke-free except the smoking room. And each time I pass
the room I never see a lot of people in there. So it seems to work
    well.

Bob, how is this taking away their rights? They are not being told
they cannot smoke, just that there are certain areas they need to go to
to smoke. Seems more than fair to me. Being allergic to cigarette
smoke, I can finally breathe again and not go around nauseus and dizzy
from breathing second hand smoke all day. I'm not even going to get
into the detrimental health consequences of breathing second hand smoke.

A real controversial subject, this one.

I just think that it's becoming so hard to enjoy your smoking

HLO is a non-smoking site. You must be 100ft away from the building

    Some suggestions:

    Go cold turkey.
Start with a fast. That is dont eat any food on the day you quit.
Drink lots of water. Like I mean lots of water. When you are not
drinking water you should be in bed and on aspirin and a little codine
if you can get your hands on some. Eat well and drink and drink and
drink water. Treat yourself as if you were sick for about 5 days. Dont
go out (except to work if you must). Face it you are sick. If you can
sleep 12 hrs a day, great, sleep as much as you can. Remember that you
    are sick.

I did this and I quit for a year and a half. Then I broke up with my
girlfiend of 8 years (not a bad break up, we both needed more space). I
returned to a similar lifestyle before the relationship started so
chose to start smoking again. I smoke about eight a day, never when I'm
outside walking or shopping. I save them for home to have a nice cup of
freshly ground coffee (ethiopian black and brown blend, yummy) or with
    a scotch (single malt, Talisker)

My method of quitting was so successful that I know I can do it again
when it starts to catch up to me.
Smoking is like a TICKET, it gets you in to places and people where
such tickets have validity and meaning. I found being a non-smoker to
be incompatible with the lifestyle I maintain. It was a good experience
though and the benifits of not smoking are not lost forever on me.

smoke it later no big deal, I was happy to make her time more enjoyable
and she thought I was a good guy.

So I leave the restauraunt and am riding my bike home. I'm stopped at

eyesore of a metal box with wheels. I kindly ask her to turn the car
off and walk home. What do you think she did? She gave me the finger
and peeled away from the stop flinging dust in my face, not to mention
a full blast of heat and exhaust and a horrible noise.

Moral of the story: Ask me to put out my butt and I ask you if you

butt out if you do I'll blow the smoke in your face and scream at the

I first heard "bugger off" when I listened to an audiotape of James Herriot.
Those stories are quite useful for learning British lingo. (No, Herriot didn't
