301.0. "FUNDRAISER IDEAS NEEDED URGENTLY!" by SHIPS::BOYLAN_P () Mon Feb 27 1995 13:44

    HELLO FRIENDS,

Need some of your creative ideas.

I am on a voluntary committee, here in the UK, which is trying to set
up a Youth Center. We are of course contacting local businesses for
contributions but we also need to do some additional fundraising.

If you have an idea which I could suggest for the fundraising
committee, no matter how creative, please list them here. As a fellow
US Citizen, I know that we do very different fundraising than they do
here in the UK, and a unique fundraiser will probably attract
attention, so with world wide ideas, I can't lose!

Any idea, no matter how simple, please list, because I am just having
writers block on thinking of any.

    Kind regards,

    Paula

You could have a craft fair with all crafters having to pay for their
    space.

Let's see.. some simple fund raising ideas...

A car wash. Get the kids in the neighborhood to participate as well as
    the parents.

A Bake Sale. Get the neighborhood people to bake something that you
can sell at the sale. Things like cookies, brownies, and pieces of
cake work best, but whole cakes, pies, and breads are always great too.

Those are just a few simple ones. there is a fundraising notesfile
somewhere. I'll look it up and see what I can find.

Looks like the funraising notes file is now gone. Oh well... if I
think of any other fund raising things, I'll put them in here for you.

Unfortunately, here in the UK, they shy away from sponsored events,
which is why I am finding it difficult to come up with ideas. I came
up with some easy ones, such as face painting for children down at the
local mall. The car wash sounded good too.

    Keep up the ideas.

    Thanks

movie night---- rent a movie..show it...charge for it.

this always brought in good money

also - selling chocolate bars is a good one!

selling - citrus fruit is popular over here too.

    Paula,

What do you intend the money to cover? Perhaps some folks might be
prepared to donate an item or two.

Check out your local library, they usually stock a number of books
    aimed at fund raising.

What age range are you aiming the club at?

Running a raffle is always good too. Here at work we ran a 50/50
raffle for United Way. We charged $1 per ticket .. 6 for $5.
There was only one winner, but the winner got half of the money raised
    from the raffle.

Or, you could talk to a few local businesses and see if they would be
willing to donate something for your group to raffle off. I'm not sure
about there, but here any donation like that would be tax-deductable.

The Youth center is aimed at young people between the ages of 14-26 years
of age. The aim of the center is really a drop in center for advice,
support, help with social services, medical attention, clinic for drug
problems etc. They need to raise money for the running costs and if
things go well, they want to have supplies for say un-wed mothers (baby
    gear etc) stuff for homeless.

The library is a good idea, I will have a look.

    Kind regards,

    Paula

    Re .12

Some of the most successful fundraisers I've had anything to do with
    have been `Trivia Nights'.

That's where you fill a hall up with tables of teams who compete
throughout the night to be Trivia Champions. Everyone brings their own
drink and savouries. Fundraising is through the proceeds from the
tickets..and the beauty of this set-up is that the preparatory
investment is `peanuts' really, so the income is very profitable and
    easy to achieve.

Questions are progressively and publicly asked throughout the night,
ranging in various topics.. movies.. sports.. royalty.. Australiana
(here).. animals.. Each team collectively answers each question by
writing their answer to the question numbers on the relevant list. At the
completion of each list, lists are exchanged with other teams and the
lists are corrected as the convenor calls the correct answers to the
    questions.

A tally of each teams performance is kept throughout the night, and
    having a funny convenor helps.

Table quiz nights are big over here too, 12 pounds is the standard charge
for a table of 4, you can have general knowledge or "theme" quizzes (music
quizzes get a lot of crowds). Usually there are 10 rounds of 10 questions
each... after round 5 you have a bar break, during which you sell raffle
tickets. Also there are random table prizes so you don't have to be clever
to win anything. Not forgetting the prize for the best team name!

Having had YEARS of experience at fundraising for the local primary
school, I am convinced that a Trivia Night (call it a Quiz Night if you
like, but I'd prefer to identify it with the popular board game,
`Trivial Pursuit') offers the most lucrative return for the lowest outlay
in terms of investment, time and trouble.
