| That's right, I'll never forget the day when I saw my first StarTrek episode.
It was about 1970/71/72 back in Germany. There the series was called
"Raumschiff Enterprise" what translates to "Spaceship Enterprise".
I was so baffled.... and from that moment on I declared Mr. Spock to be
my favourite StarTrek character. Each time we (some German kids) "played"
the episodes on our own, I was Mr.Spock.... only I could do the Vulcan
greeting without problems. ;)

| Hello BenJ,
now I will finally answer your question a about StarTrek.
;)
Sorry it took so long. Work work work and so I completely forgot...
you unfortunately watched what is to my opinion the second worst
StarTrek movie: StarTrek III "The Search for Mr. Spock".
You can't get anything straight from it when you don't know the
StarTrek universe and its characters pretty well. Only StarTrek V
"The Final Frontier" is worse. ;)
A very nice and good movie is StarTrek IV "The Voyage Home" and
StarTrek VI "The Undiscovered Country".
If you like to start with StarTrek, watch some of the episodes of
the 2nd StarTrek series "StarTrek The Next Generation".
If you like to understand the StarTrek movies, you have to at first
watch some of the Original series episodes.
StarTrek has a long and sometimes confusing history. It was started
in the 60es here in the US and was designed to reflect the odds of life
and the society in those days. The Original series episodes show this
effort. But they also had to comply with the then common social rules.
Eg the first pilot with a woman as 1st officer never made it through
approval and so was never aired. It was just too bold.
The Original series were canceled after 79 episodes. Then the fandome
started actions and protests. In the 70es the old crew was "revived"
and the movies started.
In the 80es a new concept was layed out for a new Enterprise more
fitted to the change of society and of people's attitudes. The new
Enterprise was a ship for diplomatic missions. There was no more war
going on with Earth. And the Klingons, who were the destined enemies
in the Original Series were now allies.
This series lasted a long time. It was canceled last year.
Now people refer to TNG (abbreviation for The Next Generation) as
THE StarTrek series.
There is also "Deep Space 9", an offspin that is designed around
life on the space station Deep Space 9. It has quite some interesting
interaction within its character set but lacks the vivacious frontier
of exploring space. I personally like it a lot but it doesn't have
the large audience that TOS and TNG had.
Now this year a new offspin has just started out: Voyager (VOY). It
stars a female captain and some other bold changes to the crew.
Eg a black Vulcan science officer and a native American as 1st officer.
It takes it from a similar scenario as TOS: The ship Voyager is lost
in a distant part of the galaxy that is not explored yet and too far
away to get home. This setup has the pioneer spirit again, the action
and the nice interaction with new planets like TOS. And it has the
modern free society and uptodate technology from TNG.
I like it a lot.
I hope this sneak view into the StarTrek universe helps you a little
to understand its fascination. Don't get frustrated, it takes a while
to get into it. But once you are, you're never getting away from it
again.
;)

295.31 | My thoughts on ST | TOOK::MORRISON | Bob M. LKG1-3/A11 226-7570 | Thu Jun 01 1995 20:42 | 15 |
| I never watched ST:TOS. I didn't get interested in ST until TNG began. I
really liked TNG, especially the first 5 years or so. After Gene Roddenberry
died, I felt that the quality of the material declined, that is, it became
more like the run-of-the-mill programming that 90% of American commercial TV
consists of.
Here in New England, Ch. 38 carries ST:TNG at 7:00 on weekday nights and I
watch about one episode a week.
I watched one or two ST:TOS episodes after having seen TNG and they seem
really hokey. Maybe if I had watched lots of these when they were new, I would
have developed a taste for them.
I don't like ST:DS9. The first few episodes of ST:VOY were good, but I have
already gotten disenchanted with it. There is only so much true science fiction
you can get from a single spaceship that is isolated from the rest of the known
universe. And they seemed to exhaust the really good stuff in the first 10 or
so episodes.

295.33 | Mr. Spock and I | LJSRV1::LAMBRECHT | The Spirit of Bavaria | Sun Jun 11 1995 06:51 | 31 |
| I watched StarTrek II "The Wrath of Khan" again. I watched the episode
"Space Seed" first, where Khan Noonyen Singh was first introduced and
directly afterwards the corresponding StarTrek movie.
It is, as to my belief, still the best one of all 6 I know.
(I haven't seen Generations, to my own shame, but unfortunately true)
Well, the end of ST II always moves me very deeply: Mr. Spock dies.
about 10 years ago, when I first heard that there will be a 2nd movie
and that Mr. Spock will die in it I hardly couldn't believe it. Well
in the movie theatre I then saw him die. It was hard. Very hard. I
think not only me, but the whole audience was crying. I heard the
noises. It was like a trauma to me because, well, since the day I
watched my first StarTrek episode there was something like "love at
first sight" between Mr. Spock and me. He encorporated what I always
lacked and never had any chance to accomplish: logic, freedom of
emotions, a crystal clear look at facts and a bright analytical mind.
All these years I loved him and watched every episode possible.
I tried to develop as many of his virtues as possible and integrate
them into my emotional spontaneous and associative human personality.
To a certain degree I even succeeded. More than that, I evolved to a
state of combining some Vulcan brilliance with my female human mind.
But Mr. Spock is and always shall be my superior friend.
So each time I see him dying, it is hard to bear. I can watch Mel
Gibson's pretty head being beheaded in "Braveheart" but I cannot watch
Mr. Spock dying. Too many tears. :(
So each time I watch StarTrek II I instantaneously put in StarTrek III
afterwards "The Search for Mr. Spock"..... because HE comes to life
again in there. ;)))))))))

Anyway, at the Amusement Industry conference I attended two weeks ago
one of the presentations was from a Las Vegas resort. They showed a
movie and press clips and talked about this new casino. It is totally
star trek / future themed. You enter thru transport tubes, there is
a movie you watch telling you of your mission and then a 6 minute
simulator ride.
Also inside are restaurants, shops, and a full casino operation.
