288.0. "Help with Internet" by SHIPS::BOYLAN_P () Tue Jan 31 1995 15:08

I am trying to access a file to look at jobs offered by the US
    Government.

The information I was given to try is as follows:

    telnet fedworld.gov or

    ftp://fwux.fedworld.gov/pub/jobs/

I tried the TELNET but I couldn't get through to the file, I think this
might be because I am logging from the UK and possibly they don't let
the US federal jobs go outside the US. The second way, I don't
understand what it is except that it will send me a file, which would
be fine but when I type the line as it appears, I don't get anything.
I don't understand the internet, but I am anxious to get a look at
this. Can anyone help me get the file?

    Kind regards,

    Paula

Digital has a firewall installed to separate them from the net. You need a
password to successfully telnet to the outside. I'll try FTPing the file and
email it to you.

Thanks for the information, if you have any success FTPing, please let
me know how you did it, because I think the file updates each week.

    Thanks

I use Mosaic to "cruise the 'net" and the format of the pointer you gave is
exactly what that wants. I was unable to get in but I've been having trouble
with other pointers today that normally work so I'll just retry later. BTW: that
pointer was actually a directory so I expect it's more than one file (or perhaps
there's dated files archived there) so it might be more involved.

There are email agents that you can send FTP requests to that will email you
back the files/information. I don't have any of that information handy but it
might be another way to do it in the future.

Here's what I was able to pull over from ftp://fwux.fedworld.gov. My
    commands looked like this:

    FTP FTP-GW.CRL.DEC.COM 1555

    password: [email protected]
    FTP> cd /pub/jobs
    FTP> get 00_index.txt

    Hi,

Thanks it would be great if you could pull some of the files. I think
that most of the files would be too large to send as a mail though.
But you could copy them onto the Default DECNET account of TRUCKS::.

but if you want to send them as mail, could you send them as VAXMAIL to
TRUCKS::BOYLAN_P, as I have more room on that account.

I don't understand what these ZIP files are, do you? Because there is
one file which says it is all the jobs files compacted into one file.
That would be the easiest, but how does one "UNZIP" it? Below I have
listed all the files I am interested in, please just pull which ones
you can, if and when it is convenient, I figured I would list my "WISH
LIST" : If you can get the ALL.ZIP file which should have all the jobs
in it, then I would want that file, plus the ones I have marked as
    important.

Guess what? I have actually been able to pull the files myself. I was

The only problem I am having now is the ZIP files, any ideas on how to

I'll send you VMS UNZIP to unzip the files with. It's an exe file
so I'll have to send it with the /foreign flag. Just extract it, make a
symbol for it in your login.com, and run it likes this:

    $ unzip all.zip;

    where unzip is

    UNZIP	:== $[BOYLAN_P]UNZIP.EXE;

    Hello,

Thanks for the UNZIP file, it took some time but I got it to work, I
had to copy the files though as binary files first, then it worked.

I can't believe how many government jobs there are!!!! and it is
updated everyday, with positions of all types in every state, the
Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, etc.... I just wonder how difficult it is

unfortunately, some people take pride in taking advantage of the system.
Hopefully, Workfare or what ever you waqnt to call it, will match some of those
able bodies with some of the jobs that need to be done.

I think it's a shame when they b!tch about raising the minimum wage and it STILL
wouldn't be comparable to what welfare would pay.

    re: last few.

Actually, Welfare doesn't pay as much as you might like to think. For a
single parent with one child, Welfare only alots you $486/mo, $151 (or
right around there) in food stamps and your health benefits are paid for.
Try living on that kind of money.

I know because I've been there, and believe me, it's no picnic.

    Lori B.
288.1812478::REITHMon Feb 06 1995 15:2715
I know it's no picnic but I have an 18 year old trying to make it and he's in a
minimum wage job where he can bring about $160 per 40 hour week home BUT his
employer won't schedule more than 32 hours per week so he doesn't have to give
fulltime benefits such as healthcare. I would have a lot less of a problem with
the benefits given out if they would subsidize the lower end jobs to bring them
in line as well. I don't feel anyone should be forced to live below the poverty
level and don't feel workers should be penalized for taking a job.

4 weeks x ~$130/wk = $520/mo 520-486 = $34 for making the effort to support
himself.

As for welfare, he'd have to go out and have a kid to qualify... but that's
another warped feature of the system.

If you take free govt housing, on top of what they give you a
month, on top of foodstamps, on top of allowances for extra children,
you can do pretty well. I often wonder how the folks in Great Brook
Valley pay for those hopped up BMW's (of course, I'm sure it's more
    drug money than welfare money).

    Chico,

Do you know how difficult it is to get free housing? There's a five
year (at least that's what it was last time I checked) waiting list to
get on "Section 8". The only way to be put on the top of that list is
to be homeless, i.e. living in the street or a shelter. Then once
you're on "Section 8" you have to find an apartment that is "Section 8"
approved. Then you're not guaranteed that they'll pay the full rent.
It goes according to the area in which you live. For instance, if
they'll allow $700/mo for a two bedroom apartment in the Framingham
area and you can find a suitable, "section 8" approved apartment for
that amount, then they'll pay the whole thing. But if the apartment
that you find is more than $700, you pay the difference.

I know not everyone is living high off the hog on welfare Lori, but
alot of folks abuse the system. My mother-in-law was on welfare for a
few years while she went to college (she was recently divorced, had two
kids, etc), but as soon as she was working she came off welfare. She's
more than repaid her debt to society over the years.

I just don't like seeing the chronic welfare recipients. The ones
who get welfare, and their kids get welfare, and their grandkids get
    welfare etc.....
