Ahhhhhhh ... who spilled the beans??!!
Coincidentally, it just happens to be true! I was raised on a dairy
farm as a small boy. Our farm was about a mile or so from the nearest
town, Drysdale, Victoria, Australia, a town which then had a population
of about 200 people. I was only about 3 at the time. My mother had been
preparing my bath but I had gone missing, clad only in a singlet. I was
absent for at least an hour or more before the real concern started to
spread through the community - police were alerted, local radio station
started broadcasting `missing person' announcements etc. As it
happened, I'd just wandered off to check out the local town. I managed
to travel the whole neighbourhood before being apprehended too. It was
the local butcher who gathered me up and drove me home to my folks in
his horse'n'cart - which was a special treat for a small boy. (This
same butcher had two Lancia Lambdas in a shed on his property back then
too - each of which would be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to
vintage car collectors these days. One was red, one was black, and I
accompanied him on his rounds every so often - no wonder I grew up to
be such an auto enthusiast!)
I gather that the women of Drysdale gossiped about that awfully rude
little boy who had no trousers on - for many years thereafter. I don't
know whether though it was actually the inspiration for that very
famous song which Scottish singer Andy Stewart recorded and made into a
real million-selling hit.. but who knows.. gossip travels like
wild-fire across the world..does it not?
