Terrie,

Life is a constant process of evolution...circumstances keep on changing
so decisions keep on changing. Nothing ever stays the same, and it's not
easy to decide which path to take alot of times. Sleep on it, don't make
any hasty decisions. Alot of times if we just wait, the decision is made
for us or our minds become clearer. Sometimes we don't make the right
decision, anything we do we take a chance. You have a wonderful supportive
husband, so matter what decision you make, you'll have his support and his
love and that's what's most important. I agree with Jim, be flexible!!

Hugs,
Lola

    Well, here's the scoop.....

I've been with DEC for three years. The first two years as a
contractor, then a permanent hire, about a year ago. When I first
started here, it was as a rework tech. in a prototype lab. When they
hired me permanent, I was promoted, in a sense, to Tech.1, but my
responsabilities remained the same. I've been trying for the last year
to change that, and get more into the technical aspects of my position,
to no avail. I even went back to school. BUT every time I tried to
learn more about my job, more rework came up, and I was expected to do
that first, even if it was for another group, hence giving me no time
to learn trouble-shooting, schematic capture, etc.

It was getting so frustrating, that two weeks ago I started to update
my resume' and go job hunting. I've had several interviews over the
past week, and I was very interested in two of those jobs. I was ready
to leave the company for greener pastures. THEN something happened....
Out of the blue, one of the engineers I work with started giving me a
few tech. related things to do, and took some time to teach me a few
things. This felt really good! it was a new challange, and I liked
it. Then he went to my boss and suggested they get me off the rework,
and assign me to one project, as the tech I'm supposed to be. He
praised my technical background and knowledge, along with how quickly I
learned the things he had shown me over the last few days. I think my
boss is going to do this. This is what I've wanted for so long!!!

Now, the problem is, I had already resigned myself to the fact that I
was a short timer here, and would be gone either by the end of May or
the end of September. Now I'm being given what I wanted because a few
people found out I was disgruntled. I'm really confused! This is such
a great opportunity to learn quite a bit of things that will make me
very marketable in the future, but there are so many misgivings also.
I have a problem with someone in my group that I can't seem to get
past. (She's a BIGOT!) And, my commute is so long! (2.5 hours round
trip.) BUT it's such a good opportunity!

HELP!!!!! I don't know what to do!!!!

    Terrie

82.8One of life's tough choices that only you can make...RANGER::REITHThu Apr 06 1995 15:1320
Terrie,

As a contractor I've found that it's what you can add to your resume that
counts. If the new training will be marketable, it's a big bonus. Few places are
taking the time to train from within right now and just because an interview
says that they'll train you in such and such, doesn't mean that x months down
the line, that will be the case. It's easier to hire someone that already has
the experience than to take someone off a job and train them. If your group was
*promising* training, I'd say ignore it but if they're *doing* it, then it's
worth a lot more in the decision process. The old adage of a bird in the hand
being worth two in the bush holds true. You know what they're training you on
now and you don't know what will be the real story once the new place has
hooked/hired you and you're over there (I haven't done the job I was hired into
this group for yet, and it's been 6 months)

You can always start looking again and if you can add to your resume in the
meantime, all the better. I think a lot of the other benefits probably point
towards giving the training here a chance.

    1. You are more important than the job, so you need to be happy.
    2. Your job is more important than the boss, bosses change like the
wind. (Wait for a while he/she will change directions.)
    3. No amount of stress can be tolerated, so if you are hot headed, do
not worry... try directing the energy into the job... or into pleasure
    is even better.

Remember you are the most important person there...
