| Sandie,
I was a yoeman in the Navy for a bit... and have processed such cases.
First of all, he's going to go to a court martial, it will go easier on
him if he turns himself in. If he doesn't... he's libel to end up
doing brig time. At best, he'll be fined, restricted to base, and then
continue his tour. At worst... he'll be fined, placed in the brig,
then discharged with a Bad Conduct Discharge.
If you talk to him in the future, encourage him to turn himself in.
Usually they offer him the opportunity to get out of the Navy if he so
chooses... (usually a Bad Conduct Discharge). Or the opportunity to
serve some minor restriction time, a light fine, and then be
reassigned.
What to do? I can't tell you that... I can offer the suggestion that
you enform him that in 10 years experience, I've not seen anyone NOT
get caught, although one that was had been gone for 3 years.
He'll be running for the rest of his life, he won't be able to visit
you at home ever again. He has to be prepared to not only leave the
U.S. but face up to the fact that the longer he is gone, the worse his
offense becomes and the more sever the punishment will be. If for any
reason he wants to return, he will wanted for desertion.

| Find the girl, that is the usual reason if they do not go home.
And most Sailors are interested in a girl or two, (having served
12 years, I can attest to that.) the usual reason is a girl.
Follow what Skip said, that is the only thing. Too bad the young
kids get their heads on backwards.
Good luck and I ditto all of the prior advise.

| Shilah,
Thanx for the offer. I might take you up on it. I'm going to try
calling the recruiter here in town and see if he can follow up and get
me some info.
I'll post the latest after I make the call.
