35.1 | You're never too old | HOCUS::FERGUSON | You folks quit having opinions! | Tue May 31 1994 22:30 | 28 |
| I've just finished a biography of Benjamen Franklin. That was truly
mind-boggling, that one person could accomplish so many different
things. I have to laugh now when I read the thirty-something noters
complaining about getting old; this guy started a revolution when he
was seventy. Though he didn't think he'd live to see the end of it, he
did - and went on to help write the Constitution.
Everybody knows about the kite in the thunderstorm and a lot of people
know he invented bifocals. But how many people know he invented that
gadget they use in the supermarket to take the toilet paper off the top
shelf?
And of course there's Poor Richard (I'm always tempted to say Little
Richard for some reason) and all that folk wisdom. Except now they call
them cliches...
Of course he was also something of a lech and a hedonist, which didn't
sit too well with some of our more Puritannical forefathers...
I was more absorbed by this book than any novel I've read this year.
History is a fascinating subject. I wonder why the schools always find
such dry boring people to teach it.
I think I'll read Jefferson's bio next (he and Franklin were friends,
though 35 years apart in age, so it shuld be interesting).

| I've got a question about a new magazine I just picked up today called Mondo.
It's a Cyberpunk style magazine from Australia and I was wondering if any of our
friends down under could give me an idea what people there think of it. I've
read Wired for a while and this seems similar. On a similar note, are there any
others in the file that are "jacked in"? 8^)

And this bookshelf contains:
- some of my children literature
- dictionaries ;) ;) ;)
- a part of my science fiction novels
- a part of my belletristic novels
- a part of my technical documentation
- the Karl May books I inherited from my father
(Karl May was a German author writing wild west and wild east stories)
The rest is still in several boxes and waiting for the bookshelves I ordered
recently.
- oh yes, and there is that book about zeppelins from my father. With
pictures and authentic history. ;)
- and the books about (how do you guys call a model electric train to
play with??? The French word is "train lctrique")
- and all my science books
Most of the stuff I have, about 98 percent is in German. ;) ;) ;) ;)

can you tell me a little bit more about your StarTrek novels?
Are they about the episodes? Or are they something completely
different?
I have the first Voyager episode The Caretaker as a picture
magazine. With the Voyager crew portraits in full colour. ;) ;)
I have the StarTrek Encyclopedia, the StartTrek TNG Technical
Reference Manual, StarTrek - A History in Pictures, and
The Klingon Dictionary plus a cassette Power Klingon.
;) ;) ;)
More SF stuff:
Paul Hogan, every novel which was translated into
German plus some in English
Asimov (of course ;) )
Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings trilogy (hello Tina! )
Greg Bear
Arthur C. Clarke,
Robert Heinlein
Hans Dominik (a German author from the 1920es)
and much more
It was hard to split the SF literature when my ex and I split up.
We both are SF fans and had quite a collection. ;)

My latest buy: StarTrek The Original Series, complete, as Collector's
Edition.
And: the StarTrek movies I .. VI
Plus 2 small model Enterprises, 1 Klingon Bird-Of-Prey and a Borg Cube.
(for non-StarTrek-fans: "Enterprise" is the name of the hero starship,
a Klingon Bird-Of-Prey is a starship of the alien race "Klingons" and
the peculiar half-android/half-human race "The Borg" uses cube shaped
starships)
I put all this up on my new bookshelf in my new "library" (formerly junk

mostly settled by the Scots and the Irish back in the late 1400's. They
brought with them their magick and to this day they still practice the
arts their ancestors preserved for them.
It is a fascinating read! It is called, "(drum roll), "In a Graveyard
