    Yesterday, here in Nijmegen (JGO) the announcement was made that all
    temps have to leave this week. Some permanent employees here will be 
    asked to take over the most essential duties that need to be done. 
    It's beginning here! The next step is a reorganisation of JGO which 
    will most likely result in more lay-offs!!!!!

 Digital - Sells part of its disk-drive business

   Digital employs about 5,000 workers in the businesses it is selling to
 Quantum.  None will be laid off, Digital said yesterday.  Of the total, 3,500
 are permanent and will be offered positions with Quantum.  The remaining 1,500
 are temporary workers and will continue in that capacity.  "The Digital people
 and their capabilities are the key and most important asset," said William
 Miller, Quantum's chairman.  "We have no intention of packing up the facility
 [in Shrewsbury] and moving it to California," he said.  Digital's VP of the
 components division, Charles Christ, said Digital retained the profitable part
 of its disk-drive business while selling the loss-making portion of the unit
 to Quantum.  "What's left is the storage subsystems and video server business,
 and these are profitable," Christ said.  The two product areas cover half of
 the total value of the former $1.5 billion storage business unit, or $750
 million for fiscal 1994, ended June 30.  Christ said he expects revenue from
 subsystems and video servers to grow 35-45% in its fiscal 1995.

One company would buy a non-profitable portion of another to aquire technology
quicker than independently developing it (they want the HEADS technology) and
just because one company can't make a profit at something doesn't mean that the
other organization can't better exploit it.

  What's this I hear about Quantum not being on the Internet? 

    
    	RHI:  That QUANTUM doesn't have computer equipment (as updated as
    		our!?!?!?!?!) let alone internet.  I hear that they prefer
    		face-to-face contact if you have questions/problems other
    		than E-mailing questions etc.  All fine and well if you
    		work at the same site.... our problem now is that the
    		company now has 5 different sites:  New England (SHR),
    		CXO, Malasia, Indonesia(?) and California.... HEY, if I
    		have a question for a person in California, I'll be MORE
    		than happy to have 'em send me out there!!!  YA, *MY* luck
    		they'd bring THAT person out HERE!!! hehehe
    
    		I hear that we're supposta be able to keep our internal
    		mailing within SHR but not sure about the outside world...

Yeah, Software Tool and Die runs world.std.com 

I'm on the $5/month plan since I mostly use it for mail. They have several plans
depending on usage and disk requirements. You dial in as "new" and it creates
the account and then you call them to have it activated and billing determined.
I've got the network blurb that I can forward if anyone is interested. They have
a few big Unix systems. You could even set up a alt.??.friends newsgroup which
would have the same "banter" feel as the notesfile.

    Unfortunatly M is correct.  One problem many incur is that UNIX is case
    sensitive ie r and R mean 2 totally different things :^(  What a mess.

Check the bookstore for a reference guide. Learn the 10 basic commands and
how to use man (unix help facility) and you're on your way!

     Then you have the differences between OSF/1 V1.3 & V2.0 & V3.0... 
    
    	e.g. V1.3 uses small letters for some paths.. but in V2.0 it uses

    		....and of course OSF/1 is case sensitive! :->

I just spoke with a friend up at CXO who is a part of the Quantum
buy.  He already knows his internet address that he will have at
Quantum.   Something along the lines of

  I don't think Quantum can stay off the Internet for long. For one thing,
Digital has a setup called Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) with its suppliers.
Suppliers are strongly encouraged to hook up to this network so that some busi-
ness can be transacted by Email. When I was in the IC test group, many of our
IC suppliers were on EDI. The way it works is you send mail using the 
XXXX::YYYY format and the system adds all the weird characters you need for the
internet. Since Quantum will be a major Digital supplier after Oct. 1, I can't
see how the could NOT be on the internet.
  Whether they will allow "non-business" messages to be sent over their inter-
net link is another story.

    The Greatful Dead was even known in Germany. I will never forget, they
    had a great concert in the Gruga hall in Essen/Germany, I watched the
    show on tv. That was way back in 1983. I don't like Rock, but they
    did a great performance.
