right as my dafidills bloom so they all break off 8^(

    VLFT:  my kitty didn't make it.  i brought her back to the hospital
           friday morning because she still wasn't eating, though her
           upper respiratory infection wasn't clearing up.  they found
           she had severe kidney disease.  i visited her there saturday
           and they said she may make it as she was really a fighter, but

Chris,

"at risk" is what they call you some number of weeks before a layoff if you're
on the list of people they're considering cutting. The list is usually slightly
bigger than the actual cut is expected to be but they're letting you know that
they're reviewing you.

The "call to GOD" I believe was a reference to Don's initial announcement where
he used a similar flowery reference to leaving the company. It probably refers
to working somewhere else as being heaven...

BOSTON - Hundreds of people were evacuated on Wednesday
from a government building in Boston after a bomb threat in the
wake of the blast that devastated a government building in
Oklahoma, police said.

The threat was phoned in by an anonymous caller to the John F.
Kennedy building in the city centre, Boston police spokeswoman
Jennifer Carcioni told Reuters.

Police and firemen combed the building, searching for a bomb,
but initially turned up nothing.

Ambulances and other emergency vehicles raced to the scene as
government workers and ordinary citizens streamed from the

     It has a virus that rewrites your hard drive, obliterating anything on

     The FCC released a warning last Wednesday concerning
     a matter of major importance to any regular user of the Internet. 
     Apparently, a new computer virus has been engineered by a user of 
     America Online that is unparalled in its destructive capability. 
     Other, more well-known viruses such as Stoned, Airwolf, and 
     Michaelangelo pale in comparison to the prospects of this newest 
     creation by a warped mentality.
   
     What makes this virus so terrifying, said the FCC, is the fact that no 
     program needs to be exchanged for a new computer to be infected.  It 
     can be spread through the existing e-mail systems of the InterNet. 
     Once a computer is infected, one of several things can happen.  If the 
     computer contains a hard drive, that will most likely be destroyed.
     If the program is not stopped, the computer's processor will be placed 
     in an nth-complexity infinite binary loop, which can severely damage 
     the processor if left running that way too long.  Unfortunately, most 
     novice computer users will not realize what is happening until it is 
     far too late.
   
     Luckily, there is one sure means of detecting what is now known as the 
     "Good Times" virus.  It always travels to new computers the same way 
     in a test e-mail message with the subject line reading simply "Good 
     Times."
   
     Avoiding infection is easy once the file has been received - not 
     reading it. The act of loading the file into the mail server's ASCII 
     buffer causes the "Good Times" mainline program to
     initialize and execute.  The program is highly intelligent - it will 
     send copies of itself to everyone whose e-mail address is contained in 
     a received-mail file or a sent-mail file, if it can find one.  It will 
     then trash the computer it is running on.
   
     The bottom line here is - if you receive a file with the subject line 
     "Good Times," delete it immediately!  Do not read it!  Rest assured 
     that whoever's name was on the "From:" line was surely struck by the 
     virus.
   
     Warn your friends and local system users of this newest threat to the 
     InterNet!  It could save them a lot of time and money."

normally don't encounter problems with it. 

DOS: was actually designed as a program loader. That's what it is. Nothing
more. It does not at all encorporate any operating system concepts.

    LFT for this week: 
       On Monday I have to give a presentation at the Technical Exchange
       Event in Providence. There will be 2 sessions, just in case that
       I happen to survive the first one. ;)
       Each session will be with 50-60 critical customers and I will
       tell them all the theories behind our project and what their
       benefits will be.
    
    But the biggest LFT for that event is: The customers will ask critical
    questions..... in ENGLISH!!!!!

    Went to the eye doctors yesterday, after having spent almost two weeks
    with a swolen eye.  Ended up needing to drain fluid from the eye with
    the use of a needle, causing me grave pain.  And as if that wasn't
    enough, the eye doctor informed me that I need bifocals!! :(  I guess I

         colours of a day, birds singing, etc.
       - being able to cherish the fun moments and keep them in your heart

       - capture the sun and let it brighten your heart even on rainy
         days
       - not to whine in despair on a day where everything seems to go
         wrong, because for you things will get better the next day
    
    Some people never come to that stage and I feel sorry for them.

    To be let down by a close good friend is a terrible thing to
    experience. Suddenly all the trust and reliability is gone. You find
    yourself floating in an open ocean without any support, nothing to lean
    on. The support you imagined to be there suddenly turned out to be
    nothing but a shadow, a lame fluffy foam. 
    
    Turn around to the other friends you have. Don't let yourself be bugged
    by this. I had to go through something and unveiled a lot. 
    And there is a good part in it: at the end you'll always end up a lot
    wiser.

       putting together a great proposal as a response. Then a decision
       will be made. ;)

       gone, work to concentrate is also gone. ;)
       Right now I'm evaluating other opportunities within our group.
       This caesura enables me to look around and check the different

    windows today: just grey outside. Here, too.
    But..... rain and stormy wet weather means also..... renewal. See the
    soil gladly takes the water and uses it for revival of its creating
    powers. The plants's leaves are washed clean from the pollution and
    a phase of growth is again initiated.
    If you take that into account, the grey misarable weather suddenly
    gets a different, positive touch.
    I think you, with your deeper understanding of the universe's fibers

    Death.......
       ....... associations of an abrupt ending, terrible loss,
       desperation, a grief of never before experienced depth and intense.
       Questioning.... reasoning..... "Why this person? Why now?"
       Realization.... "His sudden death does not have any purpose"
       
The people close to the person who died experience shattering emotions that 
influence their life deeply. Because in the common western society death
impersonates the final ending of life. And it is an ending, a final ending.
Of life in the human body we know and are used to associate with the spirit
that used to encorporate it.

My experience over these 34 years that I live, in this human body, on this
planet have taught me, that scientific facts can be interpreted differently.
When a human being dies an energy flow is detected. According to the
"Energieerhaltungssatz" (maybe: energy preservation rule? It is a physics
rule) energy can't get lost, just transformed. My interpretation on "life"
and "death" as we experience it here postulates that our souls encorporate
bodies for a certain period and then go back to their energy state.
These "life cycles" build up experiences and knowledge. When encorporating
a body not the whole energy can be transfered, a big part stays within
"the cosmic stream". It has the memory collection of all "life cycles".
At the time of the "rejoining" with the cosmic stream (what humans use
to call "death" and what actually is only the death of the body) the
knowledge and experience collected within the just ended "life cycle" is
added to the cosmic stream. In this stream all energy entities are joined.

I know, my hypothesis sounds a little "strange" for human understanding,
but..... that is exactly how I feel. And the more my lifecycle goes on
the more facts do I discover which support my theory.

And even when I'm totally wrong and there is nothing after the death of the
body, at least my theory drives me to live my life fully without developing
fear about death.

Dear Tina, don't laugh at the above, maybe it helps you to categorize your
loss and smoothens your intense pain.

	perfect sense to me and is very close to how I have always felt.
	Read note 236.0, the second reading, it is essentially very close
	to what you are saying.

	Tina, you may find these readings in 236 give you some comfort also.
	They helped me when I lost my Mother last July, not that anything
	could take away that heart wrenching pain, but they made me feel
	a little better.

    I went to Florida on Friday to be in a wedding.  The luggage was lost
    during my return flight on Sunday.  Flew Midway from West Palm,
    switched planes in Raleigh Durham then into Boston.

    We had also a train accident in Austria a couple of days before with
    three dead people. The discussion in media was incredible. "How secure
    is going by train", "How could it happen", "Who has to pay", and so on.

	There are not many events that I can imagine being inevitably fixed,
	not to a precise time anyway.  I agree more with the statement
	"the only thing constant in this world is change".  I know what
	you mean though, when it comes time to go you suddenly remember more
	and more that you were planning on doing, or remember things you
	want to do that you should have planned.  This is why I take two
	weeks or more to write my list of things to take and things to do
	before leaving the house whenever I go on vacation.  I don't usually
	forget anything!

Jen,

I always make sure all my necessities are in my carry on...meds, make-up,
change of clothes, bathing suit and cover-up/robe, along with my camera
of course!  But you're right, the list of things to do always expands exactly
until it's time to leave, then it's always a mad dash at the end!  This trip
will be really laid back, not a whole lot to pace, jeans, jeans, t-shirts
shorts and sweats!    Funny though, it's like kitchen cabinets.  I thought I
had so much storage space in this house (and I do), but in 4 short years my
possessions have expanded to entirely fill them and then some!

    Today, Im working from home.  Here I use a two-way plug in the socket for 
    the modem and terminal, alas this morining the terminal would not work.  
    So, I fiddled around with the plugs and came to the conclusion it must
    be the fuse.
    
    Off I trudged to a nearby DIY store, spent 15 mins looking for the
    fuses, found the ones I needed and returned home with my purchase.  I
    popped the new fuse in the plug and triumphantly tried it out.
    
    Aaagh! It didn't work.  Seeking inspiration, I moved the terminal
    slightly..and realised the lead wasn't plugged into the back of the
    terminal!!!!!
    
    Next time, I'll check that first!

educational and training assistance to ensure that employees have
the skills required for the Company's success.  Digital's External
Educational Assistance (EEA) program is an investment that:

     - maximizes productivity and job satisfaction;
     - reduces the potential for skills obsolescence; and
     - assists in fostering a healthy employee relations
       environment.

External Educational Assistance is a Company-sponsored program that
assists employees in taking approved courses, degree programs, and
educational seminars and conferences that are not offered

      - identify a course, seminar, conference or program's
        relationship to current or future business goals and the
        employee's approved development plan;

      - fill out the appropriate administrative forms prior to
        beginning a course, seminar, conference or program; and

      - complete all procedural requirements (including submitting
        final grades and receipts) within 60 days of completion.

|     - if an employee voluntarily resigns or is terminated by the
|       company for any reason other than Transition and the course
|       is Career Related, the employee has the responsibility to

APPROVAL OF COURSES, SEMINARS, CONFERENCES AND NON-CREDIT COURSES

  An employee must meet all applicable eligibility requirements noted
  in the "External Educational Assistance Categories" section of this
  policy to receive External Educational Assistance.  The
  determination of whether a course, seminar or conference is Job
  Required or Career Related, and the identification of the
  appropriate tax status, is the responsibility of the employee's
  manager.

  For an employee to be eligible to receive External Educational
  Assistance funds to participate in a seminar, conference or other
  non-credit course, the learning experience must be Job Required (as
  defined in the "External Educational Assistance Categories" section
  of this policy).  External Educational Assistance funds cover only
  seminars, conferences and other non-credit courses that are
  primarily a learning experience for an employee.  When an
  employee's primary responsibility for attending a seminar or
  conference is to represent Digital, External Educational Assistance
  funds should not be used for this purpose.  When Digital offers an
  internal education or training program that is substantially
  similar in content, accessibility and cost to an external
  non-credit course, seminar or conference, employees must enroll in
  the Digital program.

  Some examples of why External Educational Assistance may not be
  approved are: no substantial current or future business need has
  been identified; issues of affordability; the employee does not

  managers would be expected to evaluate educational needs as noted

EXTERNAL EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE CATEGORIES

  Digital provides eligible employees with two types of External
  Educational Assistance: Job Required and Career Related.  The need
  to identify these two types of External Educational Assistance is
  due to different eligibility requirements.  It is important to note
  that the required tax status determination, as defined by the IRS,
  is not the same as the determination whether a course, seminar, or
  conference is Job Required or Career Related, as defined by Digital
  (see the "Tax Implications" section of this policy for further
  details).

Job Required:

  Job Required courses, seminars and conferences are defined as
  providing skills, abilities and knowledge that are necessary for an
  employee's current area of responsibility.  Job Required courses
  are normally taken during working hours and are tied to a written
  development plan.  The exception is if a course is only offered in
  the evening.  The determination of whether a course, seminar or
  conference is Job Required is made by the employee's manager.

  expected to reimburse Digital for this cost (see Personnel Policy
  6.01 Termination).


  Level of financial support for approved courses:  Digital will
  support 100% of normal tuition costs.  Registration, lab and book
  fees are also covered at 100%, and are reimbursed through the
| Digital authorized vendor (see $ VTX LEARNING for procedure and
  costs covered). External Educational Assistance does not cover
  application fees, entrance exams, entrance exam preparatory
  courses, graduation fees or other costs that are not mandated to
  participate in a course, seminar or conference (e.g., health
  insurance, optional course materials and site fees).  For Job
  Required courses, seminars and conferences, reasonable travel
  expenses should be considered (see Personnel Policy 5.11 Business
  Expense).


Final Settlement:

| Within 60 days after successfully completing a course, seminar or
| conference, the employee must submit a grade or other evidence of
| satisfactory completion (certificate, attendance letter, etc.) to
| his/her manager and the Digital authorized vendor. For taxable
| courses, the employee must also submit an original itemized receipt

| Employees are responsible for reimbursing Digital in full and
| within 60 days for any course receiving an "unsatisfactory" (as
| defined by the granting institution), "incomplete" or "withdrawal"
| grade status.   Employees are expected to reimburse Digital through
| the Digital authorized vendor (see $ VTX LEARNING for procedures).

Tax Implications:

  Under certain circumstances Digital's Educational Assistance
  payments will be taxable to employees.  In such cases, Digital is
  obligated by law to report income and withhold taxes. Therefore,
  managers have the following responsibilities:

     1. Answer the taxability questions in the Tax Status section
        of the Application for External Educational Assistance.

     2. Track all taxable courses on a calendar year basis by
        completing and retaining a copy of the Application for
        External Educational Assistance.

  The determination of taxability is distinct from the policy
  determination of Job Required or Career Related.  Taxability is
  determined from two questions that appear in the Tax Status section
  of the Application for External Educational Assistance.  If either
  question is answered "yes," then the course is a taxable course.

  Determination of Taxability:  The following information is designed
  to help managers and employees determine whether a course is
  taxable.

  A course is taxable if either of the following (A or B) is answered
  "yes":

   A. Is this course required to meet the minimum educational
      requirements of the employee's current job?

  This means that if the employee accepted a job that had a minimal
  educational requirement (e.g., High School Diploma, Bachelors
  Degree) that the employee had not met, but had agreed to pursue,
  the course taken would be taxable.

  For example, a person is hired to fill an accounting position which
  requires a degree in accounting.  This person is currently taking
  courses to complete her/his degree and was hired with this in
  consideration.  These courses are needed in order for the
  individual to meet the minimum educational requirements for the
  position, and, therefore, the reimbursements for these courses are
  taxable.

  If an employee met the minimum educational requirements when she/he
  started the current job, but the educational requirements later
  changed and the employee needed to take courses to meet the new
  requirements, those courses would not be taxable.

   B.  Does this course or degree program prepare the employee for a
       position within a new trade or business?

  In general, a course or degree program which prepares an individual
  for a new trade, business or career will be taxable.  The course or
  degree program is taxable even if the employee has no intention of
  pursuing the new career either inside or outside Digital.  On the
  other hand, if the education merely enables the employee to change
  duties or obtain a promotion within the same field of work or

  career without qualifying the employee for a new trade, business or
  career, the education will not be taxable.  In general, engineering
  is a trade or business, so an employee with an engineering degree
  working as an engineer will not be taxed on courses which maintain
  or improve his/her present skills.  On the other hand, a technician
  without an engineering degree generally would be taxed on
  engineering courses.

  Additional examples: A secretary who needs to improve writing
  skills takes a professional communications course at a local
  university.  This course would enhance secretarial skills, but
  would not qualify the individual for a new career, trade or
  business.  Question B would be answered "no." Someone who
  progresses from a personnel assistant to a personnel consultant and
  finally to a personnel manager does not change her/his trade or
  business, and again question B would be answered "no."

  The new trade or business test is difficult to apply to individuals
  pursuing an M.B.A. degree.  An M.B.A. degree may not qualify an
  individual for a new profession, but an inquiry must still be made
  as to whether the individual will be qualified to perform new
  duties which are not within the same general type of work as are
  involved in her/his present employment.  It is important to look at
  each course individually and not at the degree program as a whole
  when making the evaluation.  An individual pursuing a finance
  career is probably not qualifying for a new trade or business when
  she/he takes courses in finance.  However, this individual may
  qualify for a new trade or business if she/he takes courses in
  management or in some other field of concentration within an M.B.A.
  program which are not directly related to her/his current general
  duties.  Training Expense Data:  Managers must track training
  expense data so that employees may take full advantage of Section
  127.

| employee of otherwise "taxable" educational assistance benefits, if
| certain requirements are met.

  When Section 127 is not in effect, managers must continue to track
  the training expense data because Congress might reinstate the
  section retroactively.  Accurate records are essential to ensure
  correct tax treatment of all course payments during a year in which
  Section 127 is reinstated.  Consult with Corporate Tax regarding
  the current status of Section 127.


DEGREE PROGRAMS

  A manager must first determine if a degree program meets Digital's
  Career Related criteria (see External Educational Assistance
  Categories).  If the degree program is approved, all courses
  contributing to the degree will be funded by Digital.  Whenever
  possible, elective courses should simultaneously meet a degree
  requirement and have value to Digital.

  It is important to note that each course within an approved degree
  program must be identified as either Job Required or Career
  Related.

| Applications for External Educational Assistance must be completed
| prior to each term or semester in a Degree program.

AUDITING A COURSE

  Digital supports an employee auditing a course (as opposed to
  taking a course for academic credit) only when such a course is Job
  Required.  Audited courses must be taken at an accredited college

  or university or at media-based programs offered at various Digital
  locations.  At the end of a course, an employee must submit to
| her/his manager and the Digital authorized vendor, a confirmation
  that she/he was enrolled and participated in the course.

GRADES

  Employees registered for courses taken at colleges and other
  institutions must obtain a grade that the granting institution
  defines as satisfactorily completing a course for credit.  This
| grade must be submitted to the employee's manager and the Digital
| authorized vendor no later than 60 days following the completion of
  the course along with all necessary documentation to ensure final
  settlement.

NUMBER OF COURSES

  There is no specified number of courses that an employee may take
  simultaneously.  The manager and employee need to determine what is
  reasonable and necessary so that the employee can remain maximally
  productive in her/his current job.  As a general guideline, an
  employee should not take more than two courses simultaneously.
  However, a manager must take into account business goals, employee
  goals, and issues of affordability when evaluating a request for
  External Educational Assistance.  The frequency and number of
  courses may vary depending on:

   - the employee's job, development needs, and the appropriateness
     of specific courses for meeting those needs.

   - the employee who is in a field where functional or technical
     knowledge changes rapidly, and Digital requires such
     knowledge.

   - the need to fill critical work force skills.


CREDIT BY EXAMINATION

  Digital will support the costs for challenge or equivalency
  examinations for courses normally taken as part of an approved
  degree program at an accredited institution.  These examinations
  include the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), as well as
  other examinations used by accredited institutions.

  Digital supports employees who want to obtain a high school
  equivalency diploma through programs and/or required examinations
  that are approved by the Department of Education of the state in
  which the exam is given.

  The procedure for receiving External Educational Assistance for
  Credit By Examination is the same as for any other approved course.
  A grade or test score does not have to be submitted, but the
  granting institution must certify that the examination has been
  completed by the employee.

COURSE QUALITY

  Digital is a corporation comprised of individuals who have diverse
  educational and training needs and goals.  As a result, the types
  of education and training programs for which employees request
  External Educational Assistance can vary. Employees and their
  managers are strongly encouraged to review the content and methods

  that will be used prior to the start of a course, seminar,
  conference or program.  Occasionally, employees may find that they
  are being exposed to materials or exercises that they believe are
  offensive to them.  In such cases, employees should immediately
  notify their manager and Personnel to determine the course of
  action.

  Digital will only support university and college level courses that
  meet certain accreditation standards.  In the United States,
  courses (including correspondence courses) given by a college,
  university, trade or technical school must be accredited in order
  for an employee to receive External Educational Assistance.

The following procedures must be followed in regard to all external educational
assistance activities (courses, seminars, and conferences), and textbooks. If 
you have inquiries after reviewing all the following procedures, please contact
the External Educational Assistance Program Office at 1-800-626-1810.

Digital is committed to continuous learning and development for all employees 
in order to maintain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.  Digital 
External Educational Assistance Program is designed to financially assist 
eligible employees in meeting educational objectives through courses, seminars,
conferences and programs not available internally. (Refer to VTX ORANGEBOOK, 
policy 4.13)

1.  ELIGIBILITY

For employee eligibility requirements for external educational assistance,
access Digital Human Resource Policies and Procedures manual, section 4.13. on 
VTX ORANGEBOOK.

2.  APPLICATIONS/FORMS

The External Educational Assistance Application Form and the Textbook 
Reimbursement Form are available upon request from:

  - Digital External Educational Assistance Program Office at 1-800-626-1810,
  - VTX LEARNING, or
  - VTX PI_US.

3.  APPLICATION PROCESS

Employee: 
 Submits a completed application to their manager for approval.

Manager:  
 Determines if employee's request is consistent with employee's job development
 plan.

 If employee is eligible, determines the status of the educational activity as 
 job-required or career-related.  Has responsibility for answering tax 
 questions, in the tax status section, as required by the IRS. (Refer to 
 Policies and Procedures, Section 4.13 on VTX ORANGEBOOK).

 If approving, signs and dates the application.

Employee:  
 Sends (via U.S. Mail) the approved application for processing, to:

4.  APPLICATION VERIFICATION PROCESS

Digital External Educational Assistance Program Office:
 Verifies the application against Digital eligibility requirements and enters 
 the verified application into the Program Office employee database.

 Defers any incomplete application and will contact employee for any missing 
 information.

 Rejects employee's application if it does not meet Digital policy criteria and
 will send a letter, copying the manager, stating why the application was not 
 processed.

5.  CONFIRMATION/NOTIFICATION/PAYMENT PROCESS

Courses, seminars, conferences, textbooks and associated costs covered by the 
External Educational Assistance Policy (ORANGEBOOK 4.13), may or may not be 
taxable according to tax regulations. The External Educational Assistance 
process for confirmation, notification and payment will vary accordingly.

5a. IF COURSES, SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES AND ASSOCIATED COSTS ARE NON-TAXABLE

   - Digital External Educational Assistance Program Office sends a Tuition 
     Voucher and Textbook Reimbursement Form to the employee.

   - The employee gives the Tuition Voucher to the institution/school when 
     registering for course/seminar or conference. (The voucher provides 
     billing instructions, employee name, Badge ID, degree, major, courses
     approved for that term and the authorized tuition amount.)

   - The institution/school submits the tuition invoice to the Digital External
     Educational Assistance Program Office.

   - The employee completes Textbook Reimbursement Form(s) for payment, 
     attaches original receipt(s) and submits them to Digital External
     Educational Assistance Program Office for reimbursement.

   - Digital External Educational Assistance Program Office issues and sends 
     payments to the institution/school for tuition and to the employee for 
     textbook reimbursement.

5b. IF COURSES, SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES AND ASSOCIATED COSTS ARE TAXABLE

   - Digital External Educational Assistance Program Office will send a 
     confirmation letter and a Textbook Reimbursement Form to the employee.

   - Digital Payroll will issue a payment for the net tuition amount, less
     tax withholdings, to the employee.

   - Employee completes the Textbook Reimbursement Form(s) for payment, 
     attaches original receipt(s), and submits the completed form and 
     receipt(s) to the Digital External Educational Assistance Program Office. 
     (Textbooks are also considered taxable, if the course is taxable.)

   - Digital Payroll will issue a payment for the net amount, less tax 
     withholdings, to the employee.

6.  RECORD CLOSURE PROCESS

Employee must submit proof of satisfactory completion to Digital External 
Educational Assistance Program Office and to their manager within 60 days of 
completion.  For courses, grade submission constitutes proof of satisfactory 
completion.  For seminars and conferences a copy of the certificate (or proof 
of attendance) you receive upon completion is required.

Digital External Educational Assistance Program Office enters grades into the 
employee application database, closes record, and retains information in the 
database.

Employee may submit another application and be approved for the next subsequent 
term or course before grades for the current course or term are due.  However,
additional courses, seminars or conferences will not be approved until all 
previous outstanding records are closed.

7.  WHEN AN EMPLOYEE DOES NOT COMPLETE A COURSE, SEMINAR OR CONFERENCE OR 
    DROPS OUT

Employee submits original grade(s) or withdrawal slip(s) to Digital External 
Educational Assistance Program Office.  Digital External Educational Assistance
enters grades into the employee database and sends a letter to the employee and
manager requesting repayment for appropriate amount.

For payments which were originally TAXED, the employee must direct repayment 
for the net amount to

   employee's manager change, this could affect the previous approval of a 
   course, seminar, conference or degree program.

4. COURSE/SEMINAR INFORMATION:  Digital provides eligible employees with two 
   types of External Educational Assistance: Job Required and Career Related.

   JOB REQUIRED - Courses, seminars, and conferences which are defined as 
   providing skills, abilities and knowledge that are necessary for an  
   employee's current area of responsibility.  Job Required courses are 
   normally taken during working hours and are tied to a written development 
   plan.  The exception is if a course is only offered in the evening.  The 
   determination of whether a course, seminar or conference is Job Required is 
   made by the employee's manager.

   CAREER RELATED - Courses/programs which are to prepare the employee for a 
   Digital job or career opportunity.  They must be tied to a written 
   development plan that is approved by the employee's manager, taken at an 
   accredited college or university with academic credit(s) (unless audit 
   status has been approved by the manager) and related to a current or future 
   occupational Company need that is substantial enough to warrant the 
   investment by Digital.

 * TAX STATUS - Managers/Supervisors are responsible for determining the tax 
   status of the approved course(s).  Manager: Answer the following questions 
   for each course in order for Digital to be in compliance with IRS 127. 
   (Refer to VTX ORANGEBOOK 4.13 for more information)

   1. Does this course prepare the employee for a position within a new trade 
      or business?
   2. Is this course required to satisfy the minimum education requirements for
      the employee's current job or trade or business?

If either question is answered "yes", then the course is considered taxable 
under IRS 127 and educational assistance payment will be included in the 
employee's income and be taxable.

FEES REIMBURSED: Digital reimburses fees associated with a specific course.
Typical fees which are reimbursed: registration, lab, and materials fees.

FEES NOT REIMBURSED: Digital does NOT reimburse: Student, application, parking,
Activity, I.D. and graduation fees.

APPROVER/MANAGER DEFINITION:  Must be authorized for the dollar value of the 
course, seminar or conference, under the training expense category in the 
Signature Authorization file for the cost center. (See VTX SIGA)

5. CONDITIONS:  Read this section carefully and review the External Educational
   Assistance Policy (VTX ORANGEBOOK) 4.13.  Your signature indicates that you 
   agree to abide by all requirements and conditions.  Your manager/supervisor 
   signature indicates that this application meets the External Educational

II: OTHER INFORMATION:

1. APPROVAL NOTIFICATION: 

   NON-TAXABLE: When your NON-TAXABLE application is approved by Digital 
   External Educational Assistance, you will receive a voucher. Give the 
   voucher to the school when you register for the courses.  This voucher 
   authorizes the school to invoice Digital External Educational Assistance for
   the approved amount of your course.
   
   TEXTBOOK REIMBURSEMENT FORM (Non-Taxable):  A form will be sent to you along
   with the voucher.  Complete the form and attach original itemized receipt(s),
   submit for signatory approval and forward to the Digital External 
   Educational Assistance Program Office.  Your reimbursement will be processed
   and a check will be sent to your home address.

   TAXABLE APPLICATIONS:  When your TAXABLE application is approved by Digital 
   External Educational Assistance, you will receive a confirmation letter 
   indicating that your payment will be processed through Digital Equipment 
   Corporation U.S. Payroll.  Additionally, taxes will be withheld from your 
   payment.

   TEXTBOOK REIMBURSEMENT FORM (Taxable):  A textbook reimbursement form will
   be sent to you along with the confirmation letter. Complete the form and 
   attach original itemized receipt(s), submit for signatory approval and 
   forward to the Digital External Educational Assistance Program Office. Your
   reimbursement will be processed through Digital U.S. Payroll.

   If your voucher or payment information is incorrect, please contact Digital
   External Educational Assistance:  1-800-626-1810.

   If for any reason your application cannot be processed, you will be notified
   promptly by mail.

2. NON-COMPLETED/FAILED COURSES:  If you do not satisfactorily complete the 
   course, you must repay Digital Equipment Corporation the amount of monies 
   paid on your behalf, (tuition, fees & books).

3. GRADE/COMPLETION CERTIFICATE: You must furnish grades or completion
   certificates to Digital External Educational Assistance within 60 days from 
   the end of course completion and receipt(s) for taxable courses.

4. NEXT COURSE/SEMINAR APPROVAL: Employees may submit another application and 
   be approved for the next subsequent term or course before grades for the 
   current term or course are due.  However, additional courses will not be 
   approved until all previous outstanding records are closed.

    I feel very sad for the poor soul. How desperate must he have felt,
    how alone, terrible solitude,,, alone in a world full of people, 
    alone in a world full of dark thoughts, helpless in the swirl of the
    dark black hole, sucking yourself in. There is no light anymore and
    noone can show you the way out, because, for yourself, you decided
    that there is none...
    
    A horrible imagination.
    
    We can only hope that this wakes us up for the problems of our
    friends around us. Only friendship and communication can stop a
    development like that.

    I've got a swollen knee too. Played Squash the other day and twisted
    it. It's not so much painful but it feels awkward to walk on. I think
