OK, here is information on how to get US Goverment Printing Office
publicationsand other space books. Information is courtesy of
gregb@gemini. den.mmc.com who has compiled a great space bibliography.
DOCUMENT SOURCES:
The most cost effective source for any publication is most likely
a local library. Although most libraries have only a few of these
references available, most libraries offer inter-library loans.
See the reference librarian. For those folks who are fortunate to
have physical security access, try the libraries at space centers
like ESA, GSFC, JPL, KSC, and MSFC. Many aerospace contractors
also have excellent libraries (The best libraries are in
Washington DC, such as the US National Archives). The remaining
part of this section is devoted to methods for obtaining personal
copies of cited documents.
The US Government has a good reputation of providing reprints of
many very good documents to the general public. Many US Government
publications (including NASA History Series) are available for
sale (to those who are patient) at the following address:
US Government Printing Office
Superintendent of Documents
P.O. Box 371954
Pittsburgh, PA 15250-7954
202-783-3238 (Washington DC)
or
US Government Printing Office
Superintendent of Documents
Washington, DC 20402
202-783-3238
The US Government Printing Office is part of the US Government
General Services Administration. US Government publications are
listed in a "Subject Bibliography" pamphlet, and all subject
bibliographies are listed in a "Subject Bibliography Index." The
subject bibliographies pertinent to this bibliography are listed
below. These pamphlets are free; call and request the following:
SB-599 Subject Bibliography Index
SB-222 NASA Educational Publications
SB-257 NASA Scientific and Technical Publications
SB-297 Space Exploration
Call your local US Government federal center bookstore (see the
blue pages in a US phone book). There are about two dozen
US Government bookstores in the United States (three are listed
below). They might have a few current and out of print books on
their shelves. Most of these books are inexpensive. They will take
phone orders and charge to Visa/MC (and they pay shipping). Most
books are "destroyed" (!) after a specified shelf life (too bad).
Call now, before they burn.

NASA has been funded by the US Government to document its own
history for almost all US space programs. Like most programs at
NASA, documentation of history is also obsessively complete. Many
outstanding publications are available; most are listed in the
above bibliography. An excellent guide to start with is: "Research
in NASA History: A Guide to the NASA History Program",
NASA HHR-55. Additional information may be obtained from the NASA
History Office. NASA history is administrated and documented at
NASA headquarters:

Unfortunately, many of the bibliographic references contained in
the above reference sections are out of print. Other sources of
publications include: publisher archives, estate auctions, used
bookstores which specialize in technical publications, or
professional book finder services. A few professional book finder
services are listed below. Expect to pay at least twice the cost
of the used cover price for book finder services.

Out of print US Government literature may be obtained from
microfiche copy from the National Technical Information Service
(NTIS). Considering the source media is microfiche, these can be
fairly good quality reproductions. NTIS does not publish a rate
table, but a fair starting guess is US$0.10/page. The NTIS offers
discounts for orders of multiple copies (i.e. 25% for 5 or more).

University Microfilms prints books from microfilm, taking care of
copyright issues and royalty payments. A fair starting guess is
US$0.30/page, with a US$6.00 surcharge for cloth binding. Printing
academic books is their speciality.
