884.0. "Russia/Boeing Joint Venture (Booster)" by SKYLAB::FISHER (Carp Diem : Fish the Day) Wed Jan 05 1994 12:39
From the usenet. Henry Spencer usually has good information, so I started this
topic based on his rumor. As more info comes out, we can add it here, and if
warranted, change the base note title to a "real name".

My spies have turned up something interesting: expect a major announcement
soon of a joint Boeing-Russian project. From the sketchy report I have,
I would guess a major new launcher using Russian engines, but I don't know
for sure yet.

884.1 | Heard it this weekend | KEIKI::WHITE | MIN(2,FWIW) | Mon Apr 10 1995 07:04 | 12 |

CNN this weekend reported on the joint venture as an oil rig
based launching facility using Russian Launch vehicles based 30 to 40
miles off the coast of Hawaii?
Apparantly the ecologists on the BIG ISLAND prevented a land based
facility, but I thought most spots 30 to 40 miles off the coast were
thousands of feet deep?

FWIW, plenty of oil platforms float. They are continually kept in position by
motors at the corners.

| They had a segment on it on their Science and Technology week about it. The
animation showed a horizontal loading and a tilt up launch. They claimed any
inclination would be available.

| Seems it would make more sense to use one of those islands down south
of Hawaii near the equator.
