829.0. "DECsat" by TECRUS::REDFORD () Tue Oct 27 1992 09:43

The MSTI program described in 828.0 can build a satellite for only
$15 million. Well hey! Even DEC has that kind of money. We
probably don't need a remote-sensing satellite like that one and
that doesn't include launch cost, but the question comes up - what
could DEC do with its very own satellite?

I bet that 15 million does not include the launch. How much does a Scout cost
these days?

DEC could make money at selling high tech cellular/digital relay
satellites, it would also makes DEC name and AXP the name used
when one talks about networking around the world.

Motorola and many other companies want to launch
100's of Low Earth Orbit Satellites that are data relay and voice
relay ones. Think of it as a extension of our land lock ground
computer network system... Motorola is looking at the cellular
and paging network, but what about computer networking?

Oribital Science could launch these small birds in the 1 Million
dollar range.. AMSAT and the UK have built packet radio
relay satelittes can be built for less then a few million dollars!

It would allow computer linking and networking on a 'global' scale.
Other companies are spending 100s of Millions of Dollars - there must
be a good return on their investment.

what other computer network could say that it runs at the
speed of light :+) any where on the Earth

Adding SARSAT, and or using the satellite (free of charge) when a natural
disaster hits on the globe would put DEC/AXP on the evening news. It
    has many rewards.
