EDITOR'S NOTE: STUDENTS PRESENT SPACE STATION PROPOSALS
Eleven national student winners in the 10th Annual Space
Science Student Involvement Program (SSIP) will be recognized
during the National Space Science Symposium, Oct. 1-3, at the
Grand Hyatt, 1000 H St., N.W., Washington, D.C.
The SSIP is co-sponsored by NASA and the National Science
Teachers Association (NSTA) to stimulate interest in science and
technology by directly involving students in aerospace projects.
The SSIP competition involves over one million students each year
in nine competition categories ranging from space science
experiments to art contests to aerospace internships.
On Oct. 1, eight national high school student winners will
present proposals for experiments, which theoretically could be
conducted on Space Station Freedom, to a panel of scientists and
educators at the Grand Hyatt Constitution Ballroom, beginning at 9
a.m. Students will compete for scholarships and other awards.
Winners in three other competition categories - two winners
of newspaper competitions and the junior high school Moon Base
proposal winning team - will be honored during the National
Space Science Symposium.
NASA Administrator Richard H. Truly will be the featured
speaker at a Monday evening reception to honor the national
winners and their teachers. The reception will be held from 5:30-
9 p.m. at the Grand Hyatt Independence Ballroom. Over 500 guests
are expected including members of Congress, representatives from
aerospace industry and educational associations and Washington-
area teachers and students.
Tuesday, Oct. 2, students will tour the Capitol and meet
their congressmen. During a noon awards luncheon, NSTA will
announce the national scholarship recipients and recognize the
winners of the two newspaper competitions and the Moon Base team
winners at the Grand Hyatt Independence Ballroom. Guest speaker
will be Congresswoman Connie Morella (R-Md.).
The following identifies the eight competing national student
finalists in the Space Station competition and their proposal
topics, as well as three national winners in other categories to
be recognized.
