655.0. "The Race for Space on A&E" by ADVAX::KLAES (All the Universe, or nothing!) Thu Sep 27 1990 10:46

For those of you with cable television, check out the new docu-
mentary program on the Arts and Entertainment Network (A&E) starting
on Monday, October 1, at 8 p.m. EDT.

DAVID L. WOLPER PRESENTS will have as its first program "The
Race for Space", a 1958 documentary which, according to TV GUIDE,
shows "the history of rocketry that went unseen for two years be-
cause of the networks' policy of not airing independent films."
Mike Wallace, later of 60 MINUTES (CBS), narrated this early film
    on the space program.

"The Race for Space" will be rebroadcast that same evening at
midnight (12 a.m.). The documentary is one hour in length.

Did anyone watch this program? Would you like to give a report
on it? I was unable to either see or tape it.

    	Thanks

I didn't see the A&E broadcast, but I have seen that film before
(unless Wolper made two programs with the same name). Basically just
discussion and some footage of early projects; I don't recall it being
    very spectacular.
