616.0. "Space Models." by 6181::LOGSDON () Fri May 11 1990 22:08

Space lovers and I hope model lovers, can you tell me who makes
the best Models for space lovers. I would like to get a good model
of a shuttle and other space related material but don,t want just
a piece of plastic to hang from the ceiling but a good looking model
    with some detail. Any input?

For reference material, try Kalmbach's "Famous Spaceships of Fact
and Fancy" ($8.50). It is a mid-1970s book with excellent data
on the Saturn V, Apollo, and the space shuttle, as well as such
famous fiction craft as the Star Wars X-Wing and Star Trek's
    Enterprise.

The following is a list of kits I recall. Kits marked with (*)
are, to my knowledge, no longer in production:

Space shuttle (orbiter). Monogram's 1/72 scale has the most detail
you'll get in the orbiter alone. Revell's 1/144 is a more manageable
    size but less detailed.

Space shuttle (orbiter, ET and SRBs). I think the only kit available
    is Revell's 1/144.

Space shuttle (orbiter, ET, SRBs AND launch tower!) Again, only
    Revell's 1/144 kit - looks VERY complex!

Astronaut with manned maneuvering unit (MMU). Revell 1/6 (?) scale
model of an astronaut in an EVA pressure suit.

Mercury & Gemini (*) Revell used to have a 1/72 kit of both spacecraft
    in one box.

Gemini (*) Revell used to make a magnificent 1/24 scale kit; I think
it might have been re-issued recently.

Apollo CSM + LM (*) Both Revell and Heller made 1/100 kits with
both spacecraft; the Heller kit might still be around.

Apollo CSM. Monogram made a huge 1/32 model years ago; it WAS
re-issued for the Young Astronaut's Program and should still be
    available.

Apollo Lunar Module. (*) Revell had a lovely 1/48 kit; no longer
    available.

Saturn V. The only two I remember were Monogram's 1/144, which
was pretty crude, and Revell's 1/100 which was huge and expensive.
Some other companies made the Saturn; I don't know if ANY of them
    exist today.

    Vostok. (*) Revell did make a 1/24 kit of the Soviet spacecraft;
I think there is another company currently issuing this.

    ===================================================================

In addition to these, there have been numerous kits which are long
    gone: Hawk's Jupiter-C, Revell's Mercury-Atlas, Revell's V-2, etc.
Most of the kits can be found at better hobby shops and at toy shops
(Kay Bee, Toys R Us, etc.)

    Good luck!

Nice list Eric.

There's a plastic model conference on the net at: IOALOT::PLASTIC
SCALE MODELLING, though I'd check it against the latest listing
since IOALOT used to host the RC models conference and it was
moved from there.
616.3STAR::HUGHESYou knew the job was dangerous when you took it Fred.Mon May 14 1990 14:5110
I have some info on older models. Let me know if you have something
specific in mind and I'll check.

Revell (Europe) make a nice Ariane 4 model, not sure if it ever made it
    to the US.

A Mass company is planning to reissue the Hawk Jupiter C real soon and
several other old space related kits.

616.4Where's the camera when you need one!ROGER::GAUDETBecause the Earth is 2/3 waterMon Sep 16 1991 15:0110
I saw the most spectacular model of a space shuttle/ET/SRBs sitting on a MLP
that I've ever seen this passed weekend at the Eastern States Exhibition (a.k.a.
the "Big E") in West Springfield, Mass. It was made out of Lego (R) blocks, and
stood about 6 feet tall! The detail was incredible. Has anyone seen this?
According to the gentleman at the display it took one person 6 weeks (5
days/week, 8 hours/day) to complete the model. There was also an 8 foot model
of an astronaut (this one supposedly took 8 weeks to complete). They were
having a contest to guess the number of blocks used to construct the astronaut.

616.5Amazing models!POBOX::KAPLOWSet the WAYBACK machine for 1982Mon Sep 16 1991 18:486
I got pictures of these when they were in Chicago (Woodfield Mall
actually) about 2 years ago. They had models of everything from
Jules Verne's fictional flight, Goddard's first liquid fuel
rocket, on up thru history to the Shuttle. they even had an
Ariane, and maybe a Soviet rocket. There were about 15 display
cases of models, plus the huge shuttle stack and the astronaut.

You might want to try:

	Raumfahrt Space Service
	Rochlitzer Strasse 62
	O-9250 Mittweida
	Germany

They have a small, but good selection of German and Russian
cloth patches, plastic model kits of Energia & Buran 1:288 scale,
Vostok 1:25 scale, Vostok/Soyuz/Luna launcher 1:144 scale, Ariane
1:288 scale. Wooden models of Soyuz Launcher 1:144, Japanese HOPE
shuttle 1:144, German Sanger Shuttle 1:144, and they will also take
special orders for models.
