I believe the information was released some time ago by the Soviets as a result of Glasnost, but I missed out - can someone enlighten me about the fate Yuri Gagarin - I know he died in a plane crash some time ago but they were rather candid about the circumstances at the time... Martin

-< lost lift >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gee I think there is a note somewhere about Yuri, however the latest that I have seen in TASS stated that another plane was to close to Yuri's and it suck the air out. Yuri was to low at the time to recover... However a pilot reviewed the article and the distance that were quoted that the two planes passed by each other was to far apart for this to have happen.. As for the Soviet Ship Kosm Yuri Gagarin it will be making port calls in Portugal and Rotterdam most likely in late June or Early July - if you live near by you may want to check with your Harbor Master. cheers john | |||||

Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarian, the first human to orbit Earth in space in VOSTOK 1 on April 12, 1961, died in 1968 when the plane he was flying crashed. Yuri never flew another space mission after his historic 1961 flight, but supposedly he was going to fly SOYUZ 1 in 1967. Had this occured, Yuri might also have been the first human to die in spaceflight as well: SOYUZ 1 crashed when its parachute tangled upon landing, killing cosmonaut Komarov. Such books as THE ILLUSTRATED ENCYCYLOPEDIA OF SPACE TECHNOLOGY, now in bookstores, are very good at answering these types of questions. Larry |
