592.0. "Shuttle and Pad 39A photos" by LINNHE::SYSTEM () Tue Jan 09 1990 03:48

Having regressed back to my childhood days I am currently building a model of
the shuttle along with the launch pad. Unfortunately the few photos that I
have poor angles of view and detail of the correct colour scheme.

Does anyone have any unwanted colour photos (of either) to help me out 'cos
I'll have to use best guess otherwise! Even reasonable quality magazine
article would help.

Thanks in advance

If you post a mailstop, I can send you some photocopies of some LC39A photos
from the Apollo/Saturn V days which show good detail of the pad.

Thanks a lot

You can send them (and any others should anyone else have any, says he
hopefully...) to REO F6/3.

I can now resume my childhood...

I forgot to ask one other critical question: what's your last name, so that I
can address an interoffice mail envelope properly? I assume it isn't System.

I'm just an innocent bystander :-)   Didn't .0 ask for Shuttle-era photos?
Apollo-era photos won't help. The pads are completely different now.

Re .4 - right now I'll accept anything 'cos I'm ignorant about changes made to
the pad, but yes you're right, I'm after shuttle-era photos...

Actually, the pad itself is little changed (from the photos I've seen) from
the Apollo/Saturn era. A new watertower has been added at the pad site, but
the concrete structures, access roads, perimiter road, crawlerway, etc. are
the same.

One more addition I think is that the Shuttle service structure is a new,
fixed addition to the pad; when the Shuttle is transported on the crawler, it
is self-supporting, and goes to meet the service tower which stays at the pad.
In the Apollo/Saturn era, the gantry was mounted on the crawler (and moved
with the Saturn) and thus was not a part of the pad per se.

There is also the rotating service structure which covers the bay when work
is being done on loading or maintaining the payload. The fixed structure is
very different. After all, the two vehicles are very different. The crew
access arms are different and at different locations. The ET access arm,
the "cap", the lighting rod....

If you have access to a science museum or good bookshop you might be able to
find a book, poster or calendar with good color photos. Good luck!

592.8Got some but...LINNHE::SYSTEMMon Jan 15 1990 03:306
As an update to my base note, this weekend I managed to get some decent
shuttle photos (any more would still be most welcome though...), but I still
have precious few pad photos, so any help offered would be most appeciated...

592.9A PAD and SHUTTLE kit exists...TROA01::PIERCEThe network is the plumbing...Mon Jan 15 1990 11:457
    I was in a hobby shop the other day and saw large plastic model
    kits of both the shuttle AND the PAD (yes, a kit model of the PAD).

    They had very detailed color photo's on the cover of the boxes,
    and I would assume more plans inside.

    If you are interested I can see if I can get the make and model.

I have a 1983 calendar called "From This Planet Earth" which contains 2 pix
of interest: (1) a nightime flood-lit picture of the shuttle on the pad. Not
bad, but because of the lighting, there are some details missing in the shadows.
(2) A picture of STS1 just clearing the tower. This is a daylight shot, but
only contains the top part of the tower. The SRB exhaust makes quite a strong
backlight, too, so the details are probably only slightly better than (1)
if at all.

These pictures are roughly 11 x 12 " or so. Note that these are both early
launches, so details may have changed (for example the SRB heaters)

Let me know if you want to borrow.

Re .9 - if its the REVELL kit, thats what I've got! The plans inside however
contain some errors and are very superficial. Also, the cover is ambiguous
due to the lighting

Re .10 - yes, please. How long can I borrow them for? Please also give me a
return address
