564.0. "Columbia gets a shower?" by ESPN::EMMONS () Tue Sep 26 1989 14:22

Last night's NBC news reported that a fire extinguishing
system dumped a couple tons of water onto Columbia yester-
day. Has anyone heard anything more about it? Is'nt
Columbia being prepared to retrieve the materials testing
satellite (uncertian of actual name) in December?

    	   Any information would be appreciated.

    	   Thanks, Ken

Columbia is scheduled to retrieve the LDEF (Long Duration Exposure
Facility) in Dec. They are presently cleaning the shuttle. I would
presume that the tiles got water damaged.

NASA was also afraid that some of the internal circuitry may have
been damaged by the water. They are currently checking them out.

A little item in the Boston Globe states that NASA officials have found
the damage to be less than originally feared. They are now fairly sure
that they can still hit the December launch.

This is NASA Headline News for Tuesday, September 26:

Tom Utzman, Kennedy Space Center's Deputy Director, says it's too
early to assess the full extent of damage to the Space Shuttle
Columbia after the fire sprinkler system was accidentally turned on in
the Orbiter Processing Facility Sunday. Utzman told United Press
yesterday that water did get into some parts of the orbiter, but it's
"too soon to give up on plans" to launch the Columbia on schedule
December 18.

The launch date for the Atlantis remains on schedule for October
12 at 1:29 P.M., Eastern time. An official launch date will be set at
the conclusion of the flight readiness review scheduled for October 2
and 3 at Kennedy Space Center.

This is NASA Headline News for Wednesday, September 27:

The orbiter COLUMBIA was electrically powered up yesterday
following its inadvertent water drenching Sunday. A damage assessment
is still underway, but officials at Kennedy Space Center are still
hopeful the incident won't force a delay in the launch of COLUMBIA now
scheduled for December 18, 1989.

NASA has opened its computerized science data bases to the
nation's universities to stimulate so called "cottage industry" space
research by professors and entice more students to specialize in
science and engineering studies. Seven universities that participated
in a pilot phase of the program at Marshall Space Flight Center gave
it very high marks.
