The following short item was in the "News Updates" section (p. 24)
of CITY & STATE (a slick-paper tabloid on local-goverment topics),
July 31, 1989:
SPACEPORT TO BLAST OFF
Cape Canaveral, FL -- Gov. Bob Martinez signed the Spaceport
Florida Authority Act into lay July 5, creating a state-run body to
"capture the future" and encourage commercial space-launch operations
in Florida.
A seven-member board of commissioners, appointed by Mr. Martinez
and approved by the Florida Senate, will be announced later to oversee
the authority's activities.
Working much like an airport authority, officials said, the
Spaceport Authority will be based near the Kennedy Space Center and
the adjacent Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, where state officials
hope one day to locate one or more commercial launch companies.
Mr. Martinez had asked the Florida Legislature to include $10
million in the state's fiscal 1990 budget for the plan, but the
Spaceport Florida Authority received only $1.9 million.
Regards, Will Martin
