551.0. "Shuttle Designations" by STAR::KOHLS (No comment.) Mon Jul 31 1989 15:30

I have a question. Awhile back, I read some of the shuttle
designations for the current fleet. They were as follows:

    	OV 102 Columbia
    	OV 103 Discovery
    	OV 104 Atlantis
    	OV 105 Endeavour?

What was the Challenger designation? I would have assumed it to be
OV 101, but I thought the Challenger was build after Columbia. It's
possible that I might have the wrong designations, but I got them from
deep in this notes file. Any help?

I heard that Challenger was OV 99 and that it was not originally suppose
to fly. It had been built for stress testing. I believe that Enterprise,
which was used for the drop tests, was OV 101 but it was too heavy to fly
into space with any meaningfull cargo. That may be why they took the lighter
air(space)frame 099 for the 2nd orbiter.

I did. It didn't answer my questions. That's why I asked them here.
I probably should have written this topic there, but most of the replies
    were regarding payloads and such.

Can anyone confirm reply .1 ? I hadn't heard that, but it sounds kind
    of interesting.

reply .1 is correct. Challenger was OV-99, originally a dynamic test article.
