I heard on CNN over the weekend an active astronaut (last name Griggs, not sure of first name) died in a light plane crash. The report said he was possibly performing some stunt maneuvers. He was due to (co-)pilot a Shuttle mission in November, and had flown once prior.

Stanley David Griggs, who joined the astronaut corps in August 1978, was scheduled to pilot the STS 33 mission on Discovery for this fall. He only space mission was on 51D 12 April 85 on Discovery. He was a mission specialist on that mission that included Senator Jake Garn. So far there has been no annoucement on what NASA plans to do, but I think that they will replace him with an experienced pilot. |
