526.0. "DECtalk on Discovery special tonight" by ATLS17::SAKOVICH_A (Keep RIGHT except to PASS!) Wed Apr 12 1989 15:16
Tonight, April 12, 1989, at 7:00 PM Central (8 Eastern, etc), there
will be a special on the Discovery Channel about the Space Station.
The reason I bring this up is that Yours Truly will be on the show
along with an experiment that I did when I was working for Boeing
Aerospace Company. The experiment was to prove the feasibility
of using voice synthesis and recognition for automating checklist
operations during emergency repair procedures on orbit. I wrote
the software and configured the system (a MicroVAX II with a DECtalk
and a Verbex 4000 speech recognition system).
The experiment was carried out in the spring of '85 at the Marshall
Space Flight Center's Neutral Buoyancy Facility (the world's largest
swimming pool ;^) here in Huntsville, AL. Two scenarios were
conducted, repairing Multi-Layer Insulation damage and Common Module
pressure vessel punctures. The use of the VAX allowed the astronauts
to access their procedural checklists without bulky documentation
strapped to their suits - the computer was just another voice on
the Comm-Channel, responding to the astronauts requests for information
(e.g., "VAX, change voice to Hal", or "VAX, read MLI").
I had a ball working with the astronauts, and they really enjoyed
conversing with the VAX.
If you'd like to see some of the video tape we shot (I can't guarantee
how much coverage there is in the show as I've not seen it yet),
tune in tonight at the aforementioned time!
Regards,
Aaron
P.S., this note is posted in both the SPACE and VOICE conferences.

526.1 | Sounds neat - unfortunately no cable TV... | DELNI::B_INGRAHAM | A Thousand Pints of Lite! | Thu Apr 13 1989 13:05 | 6 |
| Any chance of someone taping this? I haven't caught up with the
'civilized' world yet and have no cable TV...
If someone can tape it I'd be glad to generate a few 'backup'
copies in VHS format.

526.2 | I blinked and almost missed it. | GOLD::ROLLER | Ken Roller | Thu Apr 13 1989 14:13 | 6 |
| Well, I did watch it, and if you blinked at the wrong time you would
miss the whole thing. If it got more than 15 seconds I'd be suprised.
In general, not a very good show. It seemed more like an ad for
Boeing than a informative show.

| RE: .-1
I agree - it was a poor show, and had little to do with the Voice
Automated Checklist. I've probably got 60+ minutes of video about
it, but they used less than 60 seconds of that tape!
Oh well, that's what you get for listening to second hand
recommendations!
