523.0. "How to subscribe to sci.space..." by VMSINT::PIPER (Derrell Piper - VAX/VMS Development) Tue Apr 04 1989 09:23

Prompted by note 522...

I miss sci.space too. Does anyone know how to subscribe to the direct MAIL
feed from ARPAnet?

The feed I use to get out to friends on the ARPAnet is through DECWRL::

DECWRL::"user_to_get_mail@home_host.site.type" where type is EDU, GOV, COM and
others

Given the domain style address for the subscription request, this should get
you there.
523.2STAR::HUGHESTue Apr 04 1989 12:4914
    That isn't quite what .0 had in mind.

    There used to be an arpanet space digest, which is somewhat like
    sci.space only formatted and somewhat moderated. It contained mostly
    the same material as sci.space etc, but was distributed by mail. The
    protocol used to be that you sent mail to [email protected]
    (as per .1) where nnnn is the name of the digest and you would be added
    to the list. I have not been successful in locating a list of digests.

    If sci.space doesn't come back, it may be worth someone locating the
    space digest and storing it in the aerospace notes file rather than
    have 100s of copies fly around the enet.

523.3readnews may be comingDECWIN::FISHERBurns Fisher 381-1466, ZKO3-4/W23Fri Apr 14 1989 15:596
I have heard under the table that a VMS version of ReadNews may be
available toward the end of the month. I'd rather not say any more
since this is n'th hand info, unsubstantiated. However, I wanted people
to realize that there is hope.

523.4News Reader is already available!ADOMV1::SHARPEC is bliss?Tue Jul 04 1989 22:2715
    A news reader is available for VMS from the Australian National
    University from Geoff Huston ([email protected] is a probable
    mail address). This news reader reads genuine netnews news, but
    uses a VMS like interface using SMG etc. It is probably available
    on one of the recent DECUS tapes ...

    I can supply more info if motivated/pressed, and news of this package
    has been widely distributed on the ARPAnet in comp.vms and other
    places.

    I wonder whether further evidence of NIH has surfaced?

    Regards
    Richard Sharpe

Check out UPSAR::NEWS-BACKNOTE for how to read news from VMS.
523.6Enough of USENET !!!58453::SKLEINFri May 25 1990 18:1514

	Lately people have been posting the usenet articles here in the space
	notes file. I would like to ask that you PLEASE strip off as much
	irrelavant material, since this make for long reading of stuff that is
	not interesting. For example the subject, news, organization etc.
	I am not sure about numbers, however, many of us already read the
	usenet articles and thus do not really need to see them posted here
	again. In particalar Space Shuttle status reports which are extremely
	repetive.

	Mister Moderator, what do you think?? I vote for toning down.

523.7A differing opinion...30686::STRANGESteve StrangeFri May 25 1990 18:269
    re: .6

    Well, I, for one, don't get any usenet stuff, so I rely on this
    conference to get the information on shuttle status, etc. So, YES,
    there are people actually reading these entries! Unless there's a disk
    space problem, I'd prefer to continue seeing these postings. NEXT
    UNSEEN works OK, doesn't it?

523.8I'd like to keep it.39463::REITHJim Reith DTN 291-0072 - PDM1-1/J9Fri May 25 1990 18:289
I haven't been able to get XRN to work locally and don't have too much time to
chase it. I'd like to get the interesting articles (like what we've been seeing)
without having to monitor the entire conference and personally archive the stuff
I MIGHT want to re-reference. I also like being able to look it up by mission.
You can always "next unseen" past them.

What's the point in monitoring the conference if all you get are non-involved
people's opinions ;^)
523.94347::GRIFFINDave GriffinFri May 25 1990 19:0333
There are two issues here: (I think)

1. Re-posting of UseNet articles
2. UseNet headers

Re: 1 - There seem to be a large number of people who either don't know
how to get the UseNet stuff, or don't have the time to filter through the
chaff in those groups to get the interesting stuff. I leave the decision
as to whether or not repostings should occur to the moderator. I don't
mind doing it, and Larry doesn't either. I've tried to not post truely
routine reports - although I'm sure I've done so. I'll try to be more
diligent with regard to the shuttle processing reports (or set up an
alternate mechanism for the routine stuff).

I do not feel comfortable editing the clarinet postings, as they are copyrighted
works. [By the way, we have a licensing agreement with clarinet that permits
us to repost the articles in the manner I am doing so - so these postings are
very legal.] I've omitted many reports (either NASA or ClariNet when I
thought they overlapped to a significant degree) - again, subject to my
opinion and time constraints.

And, as it has been noted, there is the NEXT UNSEEN key.

Re: 2 - As these articles originated elsewhere, credit should be given where
credit is due. I've recently been trying to add the UseNet headers to the
bottom of the articles, and I've always been trimming various lines out of them.
I'll try to reduce the set more when I can.

I'd be interested in hearing if the re-postings are valued by the DEC
community (and why they don't try to get them directly).

523.10An Opinion from the Readership2631::DAHLTom Dahl, CDMSSat May 26 1990 14:093
I like to read about 90% of the postings. I appreciate the time spent by
other folks to put them in this conference.

523.11Keep them comming52331::ANDRADEThe sentinel (.)(.)Mon May 28 1990 05:438
    Yes, keep those reports coming.

    If you can put the headers in the bottom, all the better.
    But it isn't a must.

    This conference is my only source of on-time space news.

523.12I give up!58457::SKLEINMon May 28 1990 17:188

	OK I guess I am outvoted. I know about NEXT UNSEEN, however, I
	use AVN and thus don't have that option. If anyone is interested in
	reading the USENET stuff there is a notes files on it located at
	UPSAR::NEWS_BACKBONE.

523.131 Vote to keep USENET articles.LEVERS::HUGHESTANSTAAFLTue May 29 1990 11:279
    I also vote for posting usenet articles as-is. I know I appreciate
    them a lot since there isn't enough time in the day to peruse the
    original sources. As far as posting headers, one of the advantages of
    this medium is an audit trail of where the information is coming from
    which can be important in determining how the writer is grinding
    his axe. Disk space is not currently an issue, but I'll keep you
    all posted.

523.14Keep USENET info flowing...33972::JLONGTue May 29 1990 12:097
    Yes, keep the USENET information coming. I use this conference solely
    to keep informed on Space related activities. I see no reason to
    eliminate any information just because it may be available on some
    other obscure notes conference unless there is a critical need for
    disk space. So, Mr. Moderator and others - Keep up the good work.

523.15Important stuff first, please...5393::PAULHUSChris @ MLO6B-2/T13 dtn 223-6871Tue May 29 1990 12:195
    	In journalism one is taught to include the main chunk of info in
    the first paragraph, lesser info later.
    	Given that, I appreciate the UseNet stuff and would like to see the
    headers become footers on a routine basis. Many thanks to the posters.

523.1619458::FISHERPrune Juice: A Warrior's Drink!Tue May 29 1990 13:375
Personally, I like to have at least enough of the header to know the date it
was received (or posted), the originator, and the newsgroup. But the rest does
not bother me. I can ignore it quite nicely.

523.17PAVN has a nicer interface than AVN57897::LEEWook... Like 'Book' with a 'W'Thu May 31 1990 18:175
    Try PAVN if you want a more notes-like reader interface. I use it and
    I like it. I'll see if I can find a pointer, but if anyone else can
    beat me to the punch, feel free to do so.
